I don't think the charcoal output is too high but I do agree that the tar output could use an increase. Then you can just build less tar kilns if you don't need as much charcoal. If your village is serious about industry, 12 per smelter will start adding up quite fast and eventually you will move in to making wrought and steel as well which adds to your usage.

In addition to this, it seems tar kilns are meant for bulk where as mining will be for better quality. You're going to find it pretty difficult getting that same amount of charcoal out of your tar kiln every single day at a decent quality when you try to fill it with only high quality wood.

Make some type of wood give more tar, and others more charcoal.

Seems like logical answer.

it's better than salem's system where you have to build a million coal piles every day to make some wrought iron, the problem with making things too hard is it detracts from the other aspects of the game aka you spend all day doing the same shit and get bored I think the coal output of tar kilns is fine, while it still adds another step in the manufacturing process it isn't too much of an over-burden

tbh there should be a smaller more compact tar kiln, for hermits and such

I'm all for adjusting what is out of line, but please, baby steps with the nerfing. I'm glad some of you now have oodles of charcoal, but it would not be cool if those of us playing catch up suddenly need a month to make 4 pieces.

Seems like this is already the case with tar
A load of beech I burned gave almost no tar, but pine seems to give loads

Soft vs. hard wood. Makes sense.

I think the same solution as legacy pepper can be applied here; just make charcoal the inferior option by having it reduce the quality of items produced with it. There is no problem with coal being abundant by itself, mined coal just needs a buff relative to charcoal (which seems easiest to achieve by nerfing charcoal's effect).

For tar production, you don't have to store charcoal. You can also just ditch it.

The problem is that it's currently 480 per kiln. You'd need to be running 40 smelter loads per day to use up 1 tar kiln.

Also you can raise the quality of your tar kiln to yield higher quality coal and tar. Clay will always be tough to get in high qualities but you should be able to use black coal that you mine up as a building material and very quickly it becomes a more valuable asset to raise the quality of future coal than it does to just use your black coal.
