But we're making shitty charcoal here.

Some earlier posts seem to say so:

Seems like this is already the case with tar
A load of beech I burned gave almost no tar, but pine seems to give loads

i think some of this is caused by the reaction to the slow time bug on tarkilns that some of us built 8+ tar kilns, that are now going off way faster than when we first built them all, and now we cant remove them...for me i have a cellar and main floor of a house full of coal stockpiles, plus the area around the tar kilns is running out of space for more, but once a bunch of steel is going, all that junk coal will be nice...so not sure its a problem just coal is outpacing other parts of industry. ie trees and metal production (at least in my case).

Will try pine wood tomorrow, hopefully it'll solve my tar problems. Desperately hoping that the coal output that we currently have is not actually necessary for anything, as if steel/metal production requires full output from a tar kiln we're all going to develop carpal tunnel. Feeding tar kilns is a nightmare in terms of click economy but having to load all of that fuel into smelters, finery forges, and other objects would double the issue.

Did not realize that tar kilns couldn't have quality. I was getting q9 coal from the first one I made closer to the start of the world so I figured they developed quality up just like mine went down. Maybe one of my skills was capping it? Not sure.

it would be nice if you could put whole logs in them, not just blocks

Yes, it would be. Or, well. Hmm. I like it from the click-reduction standpoint, but it's not like one IRL makes charcoal from whole logs. Will consider.

this is the only reason I want it, I don't care if someone has to pretend they are chopping them up before they throw it in but the amount of clicking involved in most tasks is already pretty bad and anything that can be done to minimize that would be appreciated.

The server remembers the amount left in a log, logs from different trees are unique, it can't be too difficult at that point to implement acceptable rates for each log.
