To word it as an example, consider this:

You are logged out of game asleep IRL, the in game explanation is that your character has gone off to herd sheep in the high paddocks or something
The next village over has come and set fire to a barn and claimed one of your villages sacred places for their own.
They are walking around looking tough and the few weaklings who were at the village have run away to gather the stronger members.

You all get together somewhere nearby, and form a plan to attack the holy place late at night when the invaders are likely to be tired or asleep, so you all disperse to gather your strength for the coming battle, then when the sun is down you regroup and fall upon your foes as a coordinated strike force.

I guess that's kind of scheduled, but not in the "Computer says you will have battle at 7:30pm" way

timed target capping (which leads to raiders actively trying to avoid pvp) is boring

contested authority objects definitely sounds better. its too bad they dont cover more space though, so you could have territories and shifting borders

This sounds pretty good, actually. Contested borders. Would work even better if things worked on a larger scale, for instance, villages band together to form a "Nation" which projects it's own border, with which towns In that nation can't be built outside of that border, if you want to add a town to your nation that's just a little too far from the border, you would need to add some sort of outpost, or assimilate another town within that area to increase your range. Benefits for being in a nation, besides the obvious ones, could be cheaper teleport back and forth between the towns of a nation using signposts, or something similar. This whole thing reminds me of Rise of Nations.
Also, thought it should go without saying, all opinions and all just putting thoughts out there.
