Translation to other languages

Postby pedorlee » Mon Mar 21, 2016 10:24 pm

Along with the help of Romov I am setting up a translation for Haven & Hearth to the Spanish language.

There are many files to translate and there is a lot of work ahead.

It is not just about translating the words literally because Jorb has done an amazing job documenting hundreds of plants, animals and techniques in order to make this game. Some of the animals and vegetation are quite unique because they are located in the northern Europe and their names do not have a Spanish equivalent.

This work requires reading hundreds of wikipedia entries and doing comparisons to find exactly what the devs were referring to. There are also many references to Tolkien and other authors.

To do this I'll probably need help from other Spanish speakers and if it’s possible from Jorb to select the correct words or meanings.

These are the files to translate and also a file I'm doing in order to help other players make these translations to their own languages. As I said previously, some things are difficult to find, so I have written down their Latin names to make the search easier. ie. Some trees, even from the same family, grow just in America or Asia, so you need to find its name for the North European area.

You can edit the files either in some text editor like Notepad++ (regular notepad won't work).
Or there are tools which allow working with location files like http://attesoro.org but I haven't used those so don't know about them.
Just make sure to save new files using the UTF-8 encoding.

There is some additional code in the strings which allows embedding images, making the text italic, or making it colored, or new line separator. Things like this:

Code: Select all
$img[gfx/hud/chr/unarmed]
$col[255,128,128]{Oppressive}
i{"Ettinaz saw the signs"}
\\n

So you probably will want to be careful with those and leave them as is, that is, just replace the english text but leave everything else intact.

It needs to be saved in UTF-8 without BOM.
-Ive translated about 189 entries of the first file, composed of about 1350 names.

Fish silverbream: Blicca bjoerkna
Acre clay: Not sure if its refered to an acid composition or a color.
Catgold: no clue
Conecow: Cow made with the femenine reproductive structure from the coniferous tree, AKA cone.
Plane tree: Platanus orientalis
pike: Esox lucius
zope:Ballerus ballerus - aka zope or blue brim
Mouflon: Ovis orientalis musimon
Boxwood: Buxus
Larch:Larix
Hawthorn: Crataegus
Stinging nettle:Urtica dioica
Carp: Cyprinus carpio
Auroch: No entry in the spanish wiki, so I've renamed it to Ur, wich is the catalan name for it.
Sweetgum: Liquidambar orientalis – This is the only one that grows in europe, not very sure.
Metal – I've translated it as “made of metal” instead of metallic, wich i think its the original meaning.
Cutthroat- I've translated this as Despiadada, wich means ruthless.
Sallow- Salix
Redcurrant- Ribes rubrum
Birdcherrywood- Prunus padus
Yew – Taxus
silkworm- Bombyx mori
Treeplanter – Not sure how to translate. Doesnt seem to have a “own” name.
Goldenchain-Laburnum
Heavy earth – No clue, ive made a literal translation.
Chub-Squalius cephalus
goldbeater skin – There is no translation anyware.
Bushcraft doesnt have any translation. Can be found on the wiki.
Underdeveloped Hearthling Skull – Ive erased the term hearthling because there is no translation or other kind of underdeveloped skulls.
Plaice- Pleuronectes platessa
Hornbeam- Carpinus
Candleberry-Myrica
Rustroot- No idea
Birch- Betula Pendula
Elm-Ulmus
Roach- Rutilus rutilus
Cured tea -Cured its not the right word in spanish to talk about this part of the process of drying or fermenting or whatever Devs try to say with cured. I've chosen secado(dryed) because its the closest to the game process. Cured is refered to foods and a its chemichal alteration through salt and others.
Buckthorne- Rhamnus (genus)
Heartwood- It looks like a special stage some trees get to.Ive found no translation or mention in the spanish wiki.
Mullberry tree – Morus/ Morus alba
Burbot- Lota lota
Caprifole- Honeysuckle (Lonicera) "Spenser was very careful to preserve the old names of flowers, and he, as well as Shakespeare, calls the honeysuckle-our woodbine- by the name of caprofile"
Flowers and their associations – Anne Pratt
This is getting big so i'll add a file soon with all these references.

About the syntaxe, translation of the line : "Show\ trees\: = Show trees\:"
Must be like :
"Afficher\ les\ arbres : = Afficher les arbres\:"
"Afficher\ les\ arbres : = Show trees\:"
or "Show\ trees\: = Afficher les arbres\:"

Anything on the left side of = should be kept intact, it's used as a "key" by the client for looking up translated text.

As a suggestion, it might be a good idea to when translating names of stuff to put the original one into brackets to it, so should people using the translation meet 'normal' users they're maybe a bit better able to describe what they want.

Example:

Adln abfgn Platanus orientalis (Plane tree) sltatvant dalgnadfjn ata a, sbtnn dbgdb.

Drats! The hopes and expectations I got up for the confusion of tongues when I saw this thread are foiled!

"Acre" refers to a "field", if you will, since that kind of clay is found on clay fields. See this (though the entry is marked as obsolete).
