Give us sieve tool, please?

Postby Sidran » Wed Apr 14, 2010 12:24 am

Application: By right clicking on sieve tool, container-like 4x4 inventory would open. There are additional two small buttons on this form: HIGH and LOW. User selects which type of seeds to sieve by placing a single seed in sieve. Then, depending on whether HIGH or LOW is selected, sieve would fill up with best or worst seeds of that type which could be found on player (including seedbags of course). By right clicking with sieve on anything else than plowed land seeds would be dropped on ground, or planted if right clicked on plowed land.

Materials to build: 2 birch bark for outer walls, 4 plant fibers for sieving plate.

Applicable objects: All kinds of seeds.

Space in inventory: 2x2

I tried to emulate Jorb.

This has been suggested in diffrent ways but if you could hold the container in your inventory and it slowly filled up with either bad or good seeds (and not by just having 4 seeds in it) Then that could solve many peoples problems of makeing their dream feild and the seperating of good and bad seeds.

I tried to be as clear as possible. First, 4x4 = 16.. so its 16 seed capacity. 16 best or worst seeds that are on player, including seed bags. You first place seeds in your inventory then by using sieve you extract 16 best or worst ones. Sieve does not decide whether seed is good or bad during harvest, it merely selects best or worst of those currently in your inventory.

Alright but if they ever do implement this i hope they switch it to a better system such as the troughs how the more seed you put in the more the bar goes up this will allow for more goods that are small to be carried

I would vote for a grid interface so it keeps wheelable in case you don't want to plant directly (and you can wheel out the unwanted qualities since you would pull in reverse order).

The suggested buttons (high and low) should draw from the container (and contained seedbags) the sieve is currently placed in so you could operate it on eg. a cupboard filled with seedbags.

Maximum capacity should be less than seedbags would hold for same inventory space occupied (else it would render seedbags useless), so 25 (5x5) would imho be an acceptable capacity.

There should be one extra slot in the interface which accepts one seed to determine on which type of seed it should work.

Operation could either be instant (maybe easier to code), or interruptible with a hourglass animation and the inventory grid of the sieve showing the seeds come in (in case you don't want the full load) - but should continue on it's own (so no click once per seed sieved).

I am not sure how this is so much better than the system we have now.

I harvest my 4x6 field (with a few seed bags in inventory). Place the seeds in two empty cupboards. Use the shift-alt-mousewheel to pull the best 24 seeds out of each cupboard, adding them to a third cupboard, then pull the best 24 seeds out of that cupboard to load into seedbags for use.

I keep 5 free cupboards in my farming barn for general sorting and temporary storage.

scrollwheel sorting doesn't seem to work for everyone.

Shift + Control + Mousewheel seems to work reliably to move best quality first.

Ill give an example of possible use as some people doubt it would change anything.
Farmer has a big patch of hemp used for linen production, say 10x20 tiles. He has nature on max, for silk maybe, so thats a lot of seeds (600). Using cupboards in such situation an ordinary human being would have headache every two days when hemp is ripe. With sieve, he/she can equip 16 seedbags and harvest until all bags are full. Then, filter with sieve few batches of worst seeds, drop them on ground and continue harvest. At some point he/she can filter few batches of best seeds and plant them on the run. At the end results would hardly be perfect, but more realistic and with less headache of playing seed tetris in cupboards.

I still insist on 16 seed capacity (4x4 tiles) as it is big enough for efficient use and still small enough for smaller patches.

Is it more clear now?

For you, maybe, but I've seen others complain about it and I can personally attest to it being so sporadic I don't even bother. I just tried Swordmage's method (albeit with hemp), and I have to reopen the container several times before the game ever decides I'm holding shift + ctrl + doing anything with the mousewheel.
