Downtime: Data corruption

Postby loftar » Mon Apr 19, 2010 5:41 pm

Hi all,

As some of you are already aware, the server has been down all day. The reason seems to be a brown-out at Jorb's place, though it is unknown why the server didn't autoboot after power came back as it should have.

Even more strange, however, is the fact that some filesystem-level corruption appears to have happened. The forum database was very mildly damaged and needed repair, but no data should be lost. The game data, however, appears to be worse off. I have detected at least six map areas that have been discarded by the filesystem (their data files are empty, even though I use traditional Unix mechanics for atomic file replacements), and will have to be restored from two-week-old backup. Hearth fires and other things built since in those areas will, obviously, be gone. The in-game time is gone and I will have to extrapolate the last backed-up time to correct for it, so it will at least be slightly off, which may mean steel crucibles going out and other such things. I don't know yet if there is anything else that is damaged.

The game server will be down for a little bit further until I've looked through things.

EDIT: See my post further down for damaged map areas. I think those are all, now. All hearth secrets are gone as well (so you'll have to add a new HS manually), and charter stones will have to be reactivated if you want them to work.

Can you tell us if the areas were inhabited? And more importantly if the village of Xanadu was one of the places?

Not really. Since they are gone, I can't really tell what was there.

Well can you tell us how large are the areas? (minimap, region map, grid?)

Tragic. I guess you'll have to make it up to us by adding cool new features to the game, huh!

They are macrogrids: 1000x1000 tiles each (10x10 minimap tiles, in other words), and there are six of them. With the center of the world at (0, 0), they each span the following tiles:
  • (4000, 6000) - (5000, 7000)
  • (9000, 8000) - (10000, 9000)
  • (11000, 6000) - (12000, 7000)
  • (-2000, -8000) - (-1000, -7000)
  • (-3000, 3000) - (-2000, 4000)
  • (-5000, 4000) - (-4000, 5000)

EDIT: (2000, -7000) - (3000, -6000) was also found to be damaged, along with six houses and one subterranean macrogrid.

I have not yet found any character data that has been corrupted.
