Things that should be added to the default client

Thoughts on the further development of Haven & Hearth? Feel free to opine!

Things that should be added to the default client

Postby Ants » Thu Aug 22, 2019 8:10 pm

In this thread, we list quality of life things that should be added to the default client. Hopefully this helps Jorb and Loftar if they ever choose to update it.

- The harvest from treillis button to make treillis harvesting easier
- The "kill all" button to kill all silkmoths in a cabinet (perhaps this could also extend to animals like rabbits and chickens?)
- The ability to see which cabinets are empty and which aren't
- The ability to alt+click to drop off all items of a certain type in a container or stockpile
- The client remembering your login info for you and allowing you to switch between accounts easily
- The ability to see your coordinates and check the odditown map is also extremely useful, but since it isn't official it wouldn't make sense to add it to the default client. However, perhaps the devs could make their own version of that map. At the very least we should be able to see our coordinates so we can meet up with people.
-The ability to see the quality of things at a glance
-The ability to see how much water is left in your waterskin at a glance
-Charterstones should give you a list of other charterstones you've visited instead of asking you for the destination name
-Being able to see animal aggro range
-ctrl+g to see tiles. It really helps with village planning and keeping treefarms neat.
- The "eat all" button to eat everything that's on a table. Anything that reduces the amount of clicking you have to do is a plus.
-The ability to see dead animals on your map. In Ardenne's client the animal's icon became grey. It looks like in the default client, the icon doesn't change color so you can't tell whether an animal is dead or alive without going close to it.
I'm sure there's a ton of things I'm forgetting, so feel free to add to the list.

- Always displayed slots for the equipment hand slots, with hotkeys to access them (simulate a click to take the item from / put the one on the cursor there).
- Always displayed belt
- Lockable slots in belt and inventory to prevent accidental taking/dropping
- Moveable/resizeable interface remembering layout with the ability to dock interface components to the viewport borders/corners so they stay relative to there when resizing the window
- Extensive general options to configure camera behaviour according to user preference, preferably being able to define different configurations and switch between them
- Persistent positions for windows instead of always opening everything over the only thing the player really controls: the character
- Support for 21st century displays (resolution, scaling)
- Consistent use of modifiers (instead of ctrl used to drop something from an inventory but to not drop something from the cursor), preferably a way to remap everything
- Crafting/building interface that can be triggered through interaction with ingredients/materials in the inventory, at least the recipts for crafting/building being searchable
- Mass move with quality sorting, both 'all' and iterative (through mouse wheel)
- Instant (no animation) menus
- Everything else ever suggested that cuts needless clicking from the game to prevent RSI

already spend 10 hours in my professional setting clicking vigorously. I dont want to come home to finely click another un needed million just to harvest some trellises.

It would be pretty cool is doors for animals could be opened and closed with the same forage button.

Alt clicking to drop all stuff, like I mean really that's too much to ask for?

-Mouseover the minimap to see the names of terrain/biomes.
-Check specific items for autodrop for farming/harvesting/mining/digging/etc.
-Being able to natively toggle on an indicator of plant growth phases/tree percentages.
-Crafting window showing tabs of multiple items to craft/small craft item history instead of only one at a time.
-Show full curio values (LP/XP/Weight/Weight Ratio) by default
-Fine tuned item rotation/Camera control
-Top down camera as an option for better planning/tree planting
-Click and drag pathing for mining AND planting
-Flatten/Simplify X graphic options
-Mark/highlight [X] Item selection.

fair enough i haven't messed with the default ui in a while. other points are still valid no?

-The ability to see how much water is left in your waterskin at a glance
-The ability to see the quality of things at a glance
- The ability to alt+click to drop off all items of a certain type in a container or stockpile

These alone seem non trivial enough to affect the quality of anyone trying to get into the game.

Yes, it's a bit silly that the official client dosn't display quality clearly when basically the whole game revolves around it.

Also there needs to be a manual that explains to new users how to operate the client, how to control the character and the actions it can perform (and how to trigger them).

Waste of a post. Already shown they will do something. Might not be often, but QoL improvements do show up in the client from time to time.

Back to subject:
-Better display for damage to items. A single color shading can be difficult to distinguish if you don't know exactly what you're looking for, and isn't friendly to those who have specific forms of colorblindness. I'd really like to request a number display be at least optional if not the standard.
-Better means of backing up map and marker data, maybe even storing it server side.
-Unlock the basic camera from the 4 cardinal positions for all distances, not just up close. I don't like the :badcam because the viewport gets skewed and I find it nauseating.
--Additionally, fix the object tracker so that it works properly for :badcam for those that do like to use it.
-Some basic scripts that a lot of us have come to love, such as filling smelters and ovens with appropriate amounts of fuel. (i'm sure there's a few others around people would like added.)

Only things I can think of that haven't been mentioned yet.
Opinions expressed in this statement are the authors alone and in no way reflect on the game development values of the actual developers.

It would IMHO be better to change the mechanics to remove fuel counting.
Ovens should need to be fired for a while to heat up (like fireplace), then it should be possible to do multiple bakings using the stored heat.
Smelters are also quite unrealistic and boring currently, adding a stage to the mechanic where you deal with fluid metal could be fun and would also be a good opportunity to introduce a finer granularity to ore yields.
