People seem to miss the idea that you need to extend your claim a few tiles beyond your palisade, and some other things in this thread:

If a player in a boat chases you, don't row into deep water. They can destroy your boat to kill you.

These and also you should try to get a defense that can reduce your red opening ASAP (zig zag ruse is the best and you can get it from badgers, wolverines and boars by boat cheesing them) because anyone that attacks you will focus on red. If you get attacked by a player again you need to make sure you keep all your openings at a minimum as if they get high they'll try to cleave you for big damage and potentially kill you.
Total misplay.

No need claim alt (despite making space in studies), you can renew your bond before you lose the ownership.

Clarification/elaboration: bashing a boat with a player on, is only not an additional crime at all but also possibly the easiest way to kill another player.. If you're KO'd while your boat is in deep water, attacker can just break your boat and leave you to drown. This completely bypasses normal KO protection. As far as the Hearthlaw is considered, the person who clearly just killed you is only guilty of having KO'd you. (If you commit murder in a way that game recognizes as such, you'd get 20 days longer Outlaw duration, and this would be much harder to pull off.)

Got it. The same guy tried to bash my neighbor's boat a few days ago, so I've been on the lookout for that as well. Sneaky guys doing sneaky things :)

Luckily I got to be the victim of this mechanic this morning. Really good design!
It really is good to lose 3 weeks of progress to a completely avoidable mistake.
