Tracked scent to no where.

So my friend was murdered and I tracked down the scent both there was no base or hearth and all around the spot it pointed in. But same for the track perpetrator nothing there ether?
Is he dead? Is he multiple layers under ground? Help on this would be appreciated I used almost all the scent now too.

There is different message when the guy is dead. So he is just underground.

Alright thx cause i went in cave level 1 and the scent didn’t work. im assuming hes farther down. Is he under the spot? so say i built a couple mineholes would he be there?

You can track the scents from the layer 0 if the hearthfire is underground ?
I tought you get a message until you are on the right layer.
