Markets are pretty much seeking cache-grab now and I think it ruined significant portion of the game and trading. The game should not be means to profit in real life and shut a part of the player base off. As of now it does not differ from some mobile game apps in spirit looking into still markets alive.

Thus fix the value of gold by creating a sink for gold in the game and adjusting its presence across mines:
    * make it less abundant in general
    * gold is required for realm upkeep

The number of losers I see who just swipe a card to dump 10 tokens or whatever into a market is really disturbing

Any form of realm upkeep should unironically be removed. It's basically an abstracted gameplay system trying to represent real-world expenses that a ruler would have to make, but Haven does not, will not*, and possibly can not operate in a way that would make this paradigm work like that.

It also won't help with "dummy realms that only farm XP" - or at least it will also punish the "honest" realms and/or certain hermits by creating a disincentive to expanding unless you're certain a province produces more authority than it drains.

Simplest solution would be to give Realms a low default "taxation efficiency" and have it increase for every active Buff. Add system for people to opt-out both from Buffs and contributing to the "tax" (you don't actually lose EXP when realm gains it, but there's no handy term for this AFAIK) so people can protest if Realm has buffs they don't like, for example if the Realm is clearly activating the worst/least useful ones just to farm tax efficiency. Obviously the realm owner should be able to clearly view that X points has been lost due to people "protesting." Toggling "protesting" on/off should probably have at least 24 hour cooldown.

I gave just few example I could think of (realm upkeep was just one of them in my view - suggest better please!). The problem is precious metal is not precious few months in the game: as a rule player count drops, gold metal output picks up, and H&H is tuned into ca$he sucker by some portion of rich players.

While other materials have quality, there is a natural sink for the most of them - except precious metals. You make few rings or symbels, you replace them in a while. Gold/silver use is practically exhausted. Thus it is obvious these metals need their sinks:

    Add quality to gold and silver - aka purity. And the means to purify gold through smithing/alloying/whatever etc
    Add more and better curious, especially for gold.
    Treat golden threads as "spice" for gilding?
    Realm stones and village idols may hold gold/silver to increase challenge costs and delay siege drying if on claim and increases dramatically soak of all structures on the claim.
    I still think realm upkeep should use gold/silver. At least it should be there consumed if a realm offers no buffs

Eh, don't draw conclusions from a segment of playerbase. My village have yet to find more then 4 gold pebbles, and we are mining like crazy for months with shafts going for many provinces. Gold ain't as abundant as you think. Just some players are lucky.

Gold is in abundance once you pass L5 and go deeper. No matter which world. Markets are overflowing offering it and nobody buys it anymore.

Somehow we mined tons of L5, L6, L7(stuck now as not a single black ore patch) and found nothing.

true and real, for most people gold is super rare, to the point that selling tokens to pay to win is a lot cheaper if you put a value at your time
