Excellent idea, this would make wells actually useful.

I don't mind the wait if I just need a bucket of water, but when I need to fill a tanning tub and I go to the well with 6 buckets it just pisses me off.

*BUMP*

Water Pump
Filling up a barrel of water from a well currently consists of:
- Clicking the well with the bucket.
- Waiting for the cute little animation to play.
- Emptying into the bucket into the barrel.
- Going back to the well.
It's slow and painful. Filling up from a lake or river is the same process but without the slow and painful little animation in-between pissing you off.
This proposal is for a Water Pump:
- Like a well, it's built on a water tile.
- You can place a barrel on a tile underneath the pump.
- With barrel in place, you can right-click and click "Pump" the Water Pump.
- Cue standard timer and play animation of water being pumped into barrel. Water continues to be pumped until the Barrel is full or until you decide to stop pumping.
Visually, it takes up 1 tile of space, with the pump mechanism on one-side of the tile and a small platform in front of the pump where objects can be placed.
Instead of a million clicks and painful waiting, you can simply fill a barrel and maybe afk a bit.
- Can be used to directly fill Barrels, Tanning Tubs, Cauldrons. Basically anything placed on the tile will be filled with water if possible.
- Perhaps any barrel within 1 tile of the water pump could be filled, so filling multiple barrels from wells is really easy (and would be easier than filling them from the lake even).
- This makes building away from a river more viable, rather than painful and opens up more possibilities for land-locked areas.
Water Fountain
Combine the pump with a Fountain. Basically a water pump that you operate as above but it pumps water into a fountain at its base. To fill it, you right-click and select 'pump water' and will pump water until the fountain is filled. Water can then be emptied from the Fountain by Bucket much like from a lake or river. The fountain can hold up to 500 Litres of water.
Obviously the pump requires metal - so your standard well would remain as the metal-free variant (and like all non-metal things, remains slow and painful to use compared to its metal counterpart).

Re: Hand Pump - Faster and More fill choices
I just discovered you can fill a tanning tub directly from a barrel like with a winepress+barrel, but there's still the issue of filling the barrel in the first place.
So +1 to this suggestion.
