Thank you all very very much for the information. And kobnach thank you for addressing what I incorrectly assumed was "decay." Thankfully I didn't leave anything really important laying around, although I was rather alarmed that seemingly sturdy objects were disappearing so quickly.
I once dreamt of crafting beautiful thane's rings... then I discovered Big Bear Bangers. Now I smash beautiful things.
