Re: Character wipe?
Don't automatically assume that all medium-to-high level characters are going to ruin the game for everyone else just because they can.
The RoB is a barren wasteland mostly because of newbies cutting down every tree in visible range for LP. Most established players rarely even go near the RoB other than to trade.

You see a masterful engraving by Blaze. On it is Blaze, bears, boars, and foxes. Blaze is striking down the bears. The boars are screaming. The foxes are in a fetal position. The image relates to the return of Blaze in the late winter of 2009.

Re: Character wipe?
I doubt it. It seems to me that most of the people who arrived on the new map with significant LP, got the hell out of Dodge as fast as possible. Look for us in other supergrids - even those of us who don't routinely kill level X bears.Machenoid wrote:You are the kind of person that made this most recent map reset the peice of crap it is today. See the RoB and the area around it? See how barren it is and fenced off with claims? Where do you think the XP came from to make those claims?btaylor wrote:This game is pretty unknown and small, maybe they won't do too much. *crosses fingers*
THAT'S RIGHT, THE PREVIOUS MAP!
I'd say that the LP to mess up the RoB area mostly came from the actions involved in messing it up, performed by people who weren't strong enough when they arrived to cope with animals beyond level II, and didn't have friends who could kill the bears needed to create a village and bring down the animal levels in some more remote area. (My guess is that anyone who arrived capable of killing even a level IV bear isn't living in that inner mess.)
There are some exceptions - the goon training claim, and the city of Brodgar come to mind. But for the rest, the newb area is constantly messed up by newbs, on every map, and charitable non-newbs simply can't keep up with the mess makers to reverse it - or do anything about abandoned claims.

Re: Character wipe?
TBH everyone can kill level X bears
1 1/2 days in and i could kill one,
just grab a bow and make a complex
trap around the bear and you've got
20k easy LP as a nub, that covers your
claim and a few other things =) so,
get out there you noobs! make us
proud!!!

@Kobnach, I think people were talking about TGEA a.k.a The Goon Claim, and the other larger ones.

Server wipe -- All new characters start with an arbitrarilly high amount of available LP (1 billion) Tada, the "high end" things are now testable and very easilly so. The game is as "SERIOUS BUSINESS" about testing as L&J want it to be... BUT the paradox of attempting to "play for reals" a game that's in a testing phase, a phase which should naturally be filled with resets, undo's, and giant 6-legged bugs or giant unseen pit-falls that eat characters whole... simply should not be ignored. SWIMMING, and the tears that came after are a good example of "playing for reals" in a game that's sub/pre-alpha...Chakravanti wrote:the limits of the game at high end.
Or all those fools in the science biology class that give names to the lab rats, get attached to "Mr Whiskers" and then suffer massive heart-ache when it comes time to kill and dissect them.
This happens naturally over time as some players spend more or less time playing then others do.Chakravanti wrote:It serves the game well to have playtesters on every tier of developemnt
This, for the love of my sanity, is what i am talking about.Jfloyd wrote:@Kobnach, I think people were talking about TGEA a.k.a The Goon Claim, and the other larger ones.
[Players can have infinite LP, and Claim sizes are not limited. Claim sizes are dependent on LP. Therefore, claim sizes can reach infinity; a massive over-sight which needs to be corrected (lol supergrid-sized claim!) but because the game is being played "for reals" in a testing phase, will not be corrected. I've never heard of a good game that left critical bugs un-fixed. IE, the jetpack framerate bug in the HL mod Natural Selection; it let the player have jetpack fuel regen equal to their framerate. Cue players with 200frames/second with jetpack fuel that lasted for minutes on end.]

Re: Character wipe?
I don't really understand the reason for resetting characters other than the fact that you can't catch up with Blaze.
RoB isn't a mess because characters haven't been reset. RoB isn't a mess because new players made it a mess. RoB is a mess because it's RoB, an inherently flawed system of spawning new characters, and even more flawed for being travelable to by everyone. RoB needs to go away and be replaced with something better, which is something that devs themselves have repeatedly said.

No map reset before they ditch the macaroni worldgen and finish travel - mounts, carriages, boats, bridges, crossroads. No map reset without char reset. No char reset without reworking FEP, food, LP, item quality, beliefs, reincarnation, combat.
Make sure you have the groundwork of a new system finished before making everyone start over to test it.

Re: Character wipe?
Wow... well I didn't know that the game was still in testing phase... even though I suppose it should now, in hindsight, be obvious, but then again, I don't know much at all about that sort of thing. My point is rather that I used to be very critical about the amount of server crashes, but it now makes sense and in fact is probably pretty stable considering that it is still in testing... so well done to the dev's actually.
I was a brand new noob only about 3/4 weeks ago. I certainly didn't read the entire wiki before I started, but read it in bits as I needed to know something right there and then. This resulted in me only finding out after a couple days that trees take a week to grow and need to be planted, they don't just grow back. That was my first and foremost reason for wanting to move - the need of boards and logs.
After I had moved, I realised that there was never going to be a mine available in the noob area and I realised that I was going to have to move very far away to find one. The only way to do that at the time was if you could swim and the very next day after I decided to spend all my effort on eating bread to get constitution to 50 or so, boats were introduced. I moved 2 days later.
Moving out of the noob area had nothing to do with creature levels for me, as scary as it was, as curious, intrigued and challenging as it was, in the same breath to take on the unspoilt nowhere, where there was an abundance of resources, where noobs have not cut down all the trees and where, just maybe, I might find a mine.

Re: Character wipe?
Yes, I had the same experience. Ive read a lot before even playing, so I knew I had to get going, so I settled very far in the north, near the invisible border. Its quiet, nice, untouched there, and there are many trees. On the other hand, for every 1-2 trees I cut I plant one new, or I search the area for cut down leftovers and take them. And yes, I moved there with a noob char who approximately had 1k LP, so it is doable.
On the other hand, as I stated playing, I had absolutely no idea whats going on. It wasnt the exciting "everything is new" feeling, but a weird WTF feeling. No short tutorial, no nothing. This is understandable, as its an alpha game, but in later releases Im hoping for a tutorial. Heck, you could implement a tutor system to socialize newbs with stronger chars: invent a "tutor, lector, professor" whatever skill which enables your char to take 1-2 new chars as pupils. They have the advantage of an experienced player, and maybe a set % more LP as a pupil. The teacher on the other hand, could have other advantages - maybe in conjunction with a reputition/honor system, if something like this comes.
The RoB area should be a newbie area, but much smaller, just usable for chars until a set LP and you shouldnt be able to construct anythig on it if youre not a newbie. Maybe trees should have a faster growth rate there or spawn randomly, and if the newb leaves the area, all his constructions vanish. I know it isnt very well thought of, but it is a rough frame spinning in my head ^^
Oh, and btw: Hi forum
