Re: marksmanship
well, imo damage should link to str and perception to the ability to hit. But then again, what good is marksmenship then. Perhaps to get new bows.

Re: marksmanship
i guess they are suggesting that someone with better perception can hit a person in a more vital spot and do more damage.

Rift beat me to the punch, so I'll just second him.
It's undeniable that an arrow in the throat is going to be more damaging than an arrow in the thigh. You don't need to be very strong to kill someone with a bow and one arrow. Just good at aiming. With armor too, this makes sense. A shot to the chest at someone in platemail likely would do little. This isn't the case for chainmail, but I doubt it'll be easy to change that in the near future. I do think different effects from different weapons to different armors will be a neat addition, perhaps increasing the strength of bows, but that's another thread.

Point taken. But a weak archer won't find it easy to penetrate even chain and a padded shirt.

True. I think different levels of strength for bows could be interesting, but there's no denying that aim is linked to damage. Perhaps both should be used.
Note: I can't aim very well but I can use a bow with a fifty seven pound draw (in RL)!

Re: marksmanship
yeah either you have the strength to use a specific bow or you dont. more strength is worth nothing once youre able to pull the bow. but different bows might need different strengths (or would suffer if youre not strong enough).
i think marksmanship + perception should change the damage you do. simple as that. and it doesnt have to be ->before<- the pathfinding, but certainly not ->afterwards<-.

Re: marksmanship
I think we first need to know what kind of bows we use in this game. The sprite makes me think it's a longbow. But if it's a shortbow then perception would indeed play a bigger role. I am not entirely sure but i think the technique for a longbow doesn't rely on precision. Just a general sense of the range.
Does anyone know archers were known to hit certain areas on the body or is it just one of those ridiculous naruto actions?

I know when my dad goes bow hunting, he aims for specific parts of the deer, so that it kills the deer instead of just wounding it.

Re: marksmanship
I know i know, but bows have changed. Bows today require what..10 times less strength that ye olde bows. So they kinda work like a combined short and longbow using the best of both.Laremere wrote:I know when my dad goes bow hunting, he aims for specific parts of the deer, so that it kills the deer instead of just wounding it.

Re: marksmanship
True, but composite shortbows circa a long time ago originating in Asia would probably be used similarly. I'm sure hunting in the middle ages had some aim involved too. And it's not like the pulley system of a compound bow or the materials of a composite bow are beyond we hearthlings!
