Re: Game Development: Salem & Haven
It's a common business practice among MMO developers to advertise games as free play and offer its players to subscribe to the 'member's only' features or expansion pack. Such a popular game that employs this tactic is Runescape.nvojpo wrote:Its going to be free to play, whats this talk about paying?
Another common tactic involves what is called the cash shop. i.e. You must purchase certain items or special effects. Say you were playing a game where you had to manage your kingdom. There is an item that is mandatory in order to keep your workers building your castle. However you are only given a few of these items and you quickly run out. Then a popup comes up suggesting that you may purchase said item in the cash shop. Even though the game is 'free', you're going to be pretty damn tempted to purchase those items with real life cash if you're serious about playing.
Basically it boils down to the fact that you have to spend real life cash if you want to actually get anywhere, which is pretty lame.

Yep that is even worse than having sub every month... I just won't spend real money to buy something in game. I rather pay monthly fee to be able to play...Sarchi wrote:It's a common business practice among MMO developers to advertise games as free play and offer its players to subscribe to the 'member's only' features or expansion pack. Why build a new game, and not build from an existing one?

MEH... don't like the setting, don't like the Art style (Hint show some good concept art rather then your cruddy pre-production art). I'm more interested in ware H&H will go and if it will get back to a more rapid development cycle and from the looks of it this will not be for some time. I don't really see how Salem can be much more then a watered-down H&H or a crystallization of its current state, neither of which is appealing, H&H still needs massive work.

To be honest I think this will be a great game
Im looking forward to it, but hopefully the graphics could be improved a little as it looks like something from a Nintendo 64 xD

Sounds awesome.
The graphics however are such a let down. Feels like one of those "it's more advanced technology, so it must look better!" situations. I really hope these are just place-holders.

Common practise maybe, but there's also minecraft that's a one-time purchase, and subsequent updates cost. Also, Donation-wise works too. Advertise payments, etc.Sarchi wrote:nvojpo wrote: Basically it boils down to the fact that you have to spend real life cash if you want to actually get anywhere, which is pretty lame.
