The internet being the internet though, people will show up to grief and we end up with the same model as we do now with extra steps. Or the system would be closed to a personal group of friends and it becomes a shard group of personal servers and an official server. The idea is cool and Id play the shit out of a private world but there's a few issues that could affect the overall health of the game.
You undervalue the power of a whitelist, good communities forming and they would be self-moderated. The best communities are moderated very well and their reputation is so valuable as it is the reason players want to be part of their community. I think some communities would be far better and average a higher player count that the current servers due to this. Where most games would fracture and shard then die i think haven would find a whole new life as a private server service. It has the right mix of progression for hermits/small friendship groups to play for a long time and it has systems that would be best suited for a more managed economy. Where the stress to compete doesn't lead to endless need for botting and a slower rate of play could reduce the burn out.

Private servers in H&H = bad. It will spread the playerbase.

With the hard limit on the server of 1500-2000 players, I would say it would allow it to grow in this case.

And the only case where the limit is exceeded is first 1 or 2 days of the new worlds. Haven's playerbase runs pretty thin as is and you want to divide it between multiple servers?
Not to mention amount of management required from J&L if it was introduced makes it absolutely impossible :D

I think the reason it runs thin is because it's limited to 1 server, this is because of:

- starting time, why join late when you can join at the start of the next world

- competitiveness, you MUST bot to keep up with the 1%. So the playtime required is vastly shorted and the gameplay becomes stale much quicker.

- Death hurts more in an MMO than with just a few friends, your do not falling behind as far plus you know how far behind you really are. so the psychological barrier falls.

- The pace of the game is stressful and burns players out rushing to stay relevant for trade, or to push the quality up. Afraid to miss a crop harvest time when in a more competitive environment.

The benefits are just better:

- With private and whitelisted worlds (hosted by devs) the server owner(player) can do much of the management in-house and would be a much less toxic environment, where they can impose their own rules and guidelines to stay whitelisted. Eventually forming into their own community branch where they have their own world resets and stuff. Many games grew massively with player-run community servers such as Minecraft, ofc it had self-hosting but the same principles apply, a good host brings players and retains them.

- Worlds can be smaller for less stress on the server and require verified and maybe even subbed accounts to maintain a healthy income for the devs. Hats would still sell.

- The game would have a higher average player count between worlds starting for people to join instead of the wait for up to a year(+) that many do.

- The ability to play on a server with a community that doesn't bot or plays at a slower pace. extending the time of play for most from 6-8 weeks of extensive play to a few months (3-6 months) of less strenuous play.

- Playing with people you want to play with, not being put off by some of the more hardcore players in the community that some players would consider toxic(in their opinion).

- More data for the devs to collect and compare to player types to see what systems are actually best to work on, least used etc.

- Potential for open source/ volunteer development similar to spacestation13 or most modding communities. perhaps through a source code purchase or license agreement.

This is just to name a few things off the cuff.
