I think what people are looking for is "due process"? So a fair examination of the facts is done before administering a punishment?
Problem is crime scent might disappear in the time to talk it over.
I like the idea of some agreed upon rules for punishing criminals. That way everyone knows what will get them killed before they do it.

Also, they will not feel anxious when trying to mete out punishments and others may not lie and make things more complicated.provo wrote:I think what people are looking for is "due process"? So a fair examination of the facts is done before administering a punishment?

Re: Board of investigators
We live in an age of 'strong men' right now, who are basically 'Judge Dredds.' They decide what is right and wrong, who is guilty, and how they will pay (usually with their lives). This is quite natural given the very basic political units in place. We have small villages, and individuals. If you want to move from an age of 'strong men' justice, to an age of 'law', you will need to think about greater political units. Ultimately, a 'board of investigators' meting out the 'law' depends wholly on power. Power is reducible to the ability and the willingness to conduct violence against another player, and be able to 'get away with it' in the eyes of the people in whose name that violence is dealt out. In other words, you can set up this board, and start proclaiming various laws, but it doesn't mean anything without the sanction of the people. Leaders of villages will need to get together on this one, and start talking about larger political structures, sharing a common law.
EDIT: I recall a player making a post listing things which he considered offenses, for which he would punish others. The general response was, 'who are you to declare all these rules? Bugger off!' Well, if a 'board' of individuals proclaimed the same thing, I think many people are inevitably going to reply 'whats your authority? Bugger off!' Your authority will have to be: 'because this land belongs to such and such a political unit, and the members/rulers have agreed on these laws. If you don't like it, get out and live in the wilderness, etc.'

I don;t think the exact nature of the board its roles, responcbility and authority have been decided.
I think the idea that some sort of organsiation, what ever it is, needs to be done.

Re: Board of investigators
One draft of an idea for a balance of power:
We have two groups of players, one group is composed of 6-8 of the strongest (statwise) warriors in the game. This group has constructed a cart vault (maybe with alt character/hearth fires) with the property that all 6-8 players has to open their respective cart doors in order to gain access to the "inner vault" (is this even possible with some cleverness?). In the inner vault are deposited assault scents of the players of group two, the "Board of Investigators" who would be chosen among player believed to be respectable, law-abiding, peaceful and, importantly, in the second highest tier when it comes to pure combat ability. This "Board of Investigators" is vested with the power (chosen by as broad a basis of players as possible, backed by the Nimrods) to decide in matters of Crime and Punishment.

Only problem with blaze is that Blaze is not strong enough to take on serious players. Only JTG's. Like yourself.JTG wrote:The only form of law in these parts is blaze. Stop kidding yourself.
His position will be Vanguard of Justice, Supreme Overlord Of Rangers, Swift Blade, Champion of mortals, Lord of battle, Slayer of demons, Relic of a time past, Blaze.
Yes you must use all of this when talking about his position on the one-seat desk of investigators.

I, for one, do not recognize your authority.

I didn't even say i want to be on the board so it doesn't really matter what you think about me.

Universal recognition of board's authority isn't required for this to work. Political power grows out of the barrel of a gun.
