Materials are Strings, Branches and Boughs, iirc., maybe (re)discover them?

Rediscover the mats? Oh, and how would I do that?

Why can't big factions raid without abusing a mechanic? Id prefer if Grang answers this.

Beacon raid.

Nothing abused here, and that was the most recent raid performed by a big faction.

I am a beginning player, looking to buy a decent quality carving tool. I checked Sevilla market, and there are swords, axes, spears, all of different qualities and prices. Which type of tool with be the most cost-efficient?
Update: and what quality - essence, substance or vitality is relevant for carving?

Adventure>Mine. Click on any tile you can reach that can be mined. The timer will cycle many times and eventually the tile gets destroyed. Otherwise, I'm not sure what you're asking.

As to the meat grinder, check out the wiki: http://ringofbrodgar.com/wiki/Legacy:Metal_Meat_Grinder. You need any hard metal (bronze, cast or wrought iron, or steel).

Do whatever actions you need to discover the mats in the first place. Collect a bough and branch from a tree, pick up or craft a string object. I'm guessing you haven't found string yet. Put a few points into exploration and spindly taproots should show up. But maybe you just haven't collected a bough yet.

Nah, I've found string before. It was the bough that I hadn't picked up yet, I just found that out. So there could be a whole lot of stuff I could build just haven't discovered if I don't have the mats?

Yes.

Worded differently: you can build stuff only after having discovered (= picked/crafted them yourself) the materials needed. First character nteracting with a new item taints it as 'seen', irrelevant of having gotten the discovery.
