Very short explanation — both gildings and clothes have affinities (icons near the gilding chance stat). Matching them gives you a better chance for extra gilding.
There are 2 clothing items with carpentry affinity: wooden clogs and this new woodsman tunic.

There is, however, not a single gilding that matches this carpenrty affinity.

I see. I thought hard metal rivets are, but they are shown as cha-gilding. Feels like a bug.
