No need to say sorry, I quite liked reading this and find it to be very sensible and thought-through point of view, thanks. The only thing that I feel like adding is that I wasn't involved in justice system, per se, rather than being something I think is called a criminal paralegal? Advocate's assistant, that is. So, yeah, I've seen things from two different perspectives at once, attending court processings where prosecutors calmly listed terrible drug-induced crimes, and consulting shivering from withdrawal addicts who got hooked by a "friend" who turned out to be a dealer and now they lost control of their lives completely. So, yeah... that changes one's perspective beyond repair.

Thank you for all the responses guys. I just told them and they said some dumb stuff like, "Doing marijuana will destroy your life." and stuff like that. I understood I had no chance to get anywhere in life even before smoking, mainly cause I'm in Rockford. They had really high expectations of me because high test scores, sports, and I'm the only child of 3 that respects their parents. I'm guessing their expectations got lowered, but I could give two shits if they do or don't, cause really the best I can get here is some community college and maybe a job as a roofer. But really, I have no clue why they're so angry, if they've even said to me that I can go places, but when they find out that I smoke, their whole opinion changes, even though I'm the same person in the end.

It's kind of bizarre that someone's parent would make them take a drug test. Talk about an invasion of privacy.

It's a norm in many "tiger mom" type homes, especially when there's been issues with it in the past or behaviors that would imply drug use.

To note on your earlier post, recreational drug use is going to see a huge court battle as it starts becoming more and more legalized in the US. I'd have to do some digging, but I believe I've read companies in states with medicinal use of marijuana laws have had to bypass that form of drug testing as long as the use doesn't cause direct harm to the company (valid prescription being had, of course).

Then there's the service industry where pot use is required to burn off the stress of dealing with everyone else's bullshit all day.

They are sensitive enough to detect the presence of a cube of sugar in a lake, so they'll also detect you bring on a party walking though a puff of smoke while breathing (not that long though).

So yea, you're fucked.

Only option left is to involve the science that weed is less bad then other stuff, but given that your parents want to test you my guess is that you're young enough that this doesn't apply to you yet.

I did extensive research on the urine tests that were used by german police some years back after having been subjected to one with everything except Heroin lighting up on them - without having consumed any of the stuff. They were as sensitive as I posted, as was stated in the manual and later testified by a representative of the manufacturer (which turned into the stay-out-of-jail-and-keep-the-driving-license outcome for me).
But you're certainly right, what do I know.

They are angry because they had 'high expectations' of you and are both disappointed and scared for your future ... but you did the right thing in telling them, it must have been difficult, so well done.
I can't imagine any loving parent would be thrilled about their child smoking weed, even if that parent didn't think the effects were too dire or indulged themselves, if they know little about it then the imagination runs riot when they hear the word drugs!

As others have said, travelling away is the key if there are no opportunities where you live, if you did well enough in school maybe your parents could help in sending you away for further education or an apprenticeship ... or maybe you have relatives elsewhere you could stay with?
Look into jobs which provide board but would still enable you to study or as Jalpha said get a job locally and just save like there is no tomorrow ... anything is possible with some planning, hard work and determination. If you want something badly enough then put your efforts into working hard to achieve it rather than smoking weed and just giving up.

Maybe they used a different type of test. I live in the USA. I'm sure most smokers can back me up that it's unlikely to test positive after a month with your standard urine test.

Am I wrong?
