You CAN be transgender without being mentally ill though. People who feel like they're the opposite sex than they are shouldn't be shunned or treated like mental cases or retards, just let them be transgender, it hurts nobody.

Don't you think the suicide rates could be caused in part by the fact that society generally looks at transgenders with fear/disgust/hate? I'm willing to bet the suicide rates would drop drastically if it worked like this:

Person wants to be a girl instead of a boy. Person says "I'm a girl now." World treats them like a girl. Problem solved

I think it's pretty simple to refer to transgenders as, for example, she instead of he, and the mild "problem" of doing that is greatly outweighed by how much happier the transgenders would feel and is a net gain of happiness in the world.

I don't know if that definition is true. A psychopath is usually a very successful person in life but he still has a mental illness.

I agree with the reasoning, but this issue is complex. Some transsex people really do have gender dysphoria, measurable on MRI. Some others decide they are transsexuals because teenagers (and young adults under social stress) often cling to weird stuff to form an identity and to belong to some social group, while not having any biological drive that pushes them to assume another gender. That's two completely different groups of people. Physically changing genders would be perfectly fine for the former and might even make them happier, but the latter might really just end up putting up severe unnecessary hindrances to their life, especially since personal identity often changes as one gets older.
There's also the issue of autonomy. If I had 15 year-old kids and they wanted to undergo sex change I'd say no, just as I'd say so to tattoos and elf ears bodymods. But adults should be free to do whatever they want, including committing suicide or freezing themselves for science. But that doesn't mean they shouldn't get some counseling first.

This is a curious issue though. From what I see making a big deal of transexuality seems to be an obsession of americans, probably as a form of compensation for their overly conservative sex culture. Canada's Bill C-16 and the US' bathroom histeria sound both ridiculous. I don't think non-american ethics and gender scholars or even politicians care much about this.

For me it's a much bigger issue when other people decide to mess with another person's body, as happens in circumcision or army tattoos made by peer pressure, or doctors cutting off intersex people's parts after birth without consent from anyone.
