Guns don't stop rapists any more than pepper sprays. Tasers and such are more effective, but still not perfect, as we have really good video of a guy getting tasered by many cops and still fighting. Took like a half dozen cops to subdue the guy, and they had to beat him senseless.

You know that aiming a taser is harder than aiming a gun right? With a taser, you have to make sure both prongs land in the target; otherwise, no current is discharged into the body. If you're in a situation in which you can land a taser in your target, you can land a bullet in them easier. I know several cops, and the reason they're more concerned about deescalating to a taser is because it isn't as reliable as a gun. I think you're being a bit ignorant about self-defense.

When I speak of a taser, I'm speaking of a hand-held model that can be used in hand-to-hand fighting, not something designed to take down an opponent at long range, though many models will function either way. It's just too easy to knock a handgun loose. Same can be said about a taser, but you can just lay on the button and any contact is good contact, making it harder to disarm a person with a taser. A gun on the other hand, you better make sure it's pointing away from you and that you're going to hit your target. What's worse than being a victim? A victim that shot themselves, or worse, another victim with a stray bullet.

I haven't taken much self defense, but the little I have taken has taught me this much: I don't stand a chance vs an armed opponent other than via sheer luck or the attacker's ineptitude. I'd rather give up my wallet if I'm being mugged than risk a gun battle.

I fully support everyone's right to bear arms. But!! If you are going to carry a firearm, you better damn well know how and when to use it properly so you don't injure yourself or others. If you don't, don't carry, or at least don't draw. And get one of those biometric locks so it can't be used against you.

Oh, and a second thought on the subject:

I have relatives that work in schools. One is a teacher, another was an administrator. Both have said in the last few days/months (since this came up after the last mass school shooting) that they knew several teachers and staff that shouldn't possess a weapon, let alone a firearm, while on duty.

I dunno Shubla, if someone tries to forcibly put their dick inside me, I think that'd warrant me putting a 9mm inside them. Maybe you're okay with being raped, but I for one am not.

shubla, you're right that most rapes dont happen in random allies from strangers. more often than not, women know their rapists beforehand. and many of those rapes are caused by women not understanding male libido and teasing him for a very long time without actually giving any sex. regardless of whether you think its right or wrong, women are generally not just randomly attacked with no provocation. they did something to put themselves in that situation.

and i for one am not advocating the death penalty be it by the victim or the goverment for rapists. but the threat of death, the threat of the gun will dissuade the rapist from attempting to rape. if its suddenly common knowledge that people carry guns with them everywhere, that rapist has something to fear.

hell rapists have changed their mind just because i women turned and boldly asked them what in the hell they want. just the idea that she might put up a fight has persuaded rapists to not rape. so of course a gun would be much more effective. rapists want an easy target. just like robbers. just like most criminals. they dont want a lot of risk associated with whatever they are planning to do.

You could have any gun you want, it's not going to help you one bit in a back alley mugging or rape, because by the time you draw you'll have 15 stab wounds in you. As for home defence, a rifle is retarded, you're just going to kill your family members through the walls. Shotgun with small pellets is your best bet, to limit wall penetration as much as possible. Rifles are only good for hunting and war.
