Game Development: Fall Time Frolicking

We've been developing, and here's what's new.

Image

New Implementations
-----------------------
  • Added Leaf Piles. As autumn progresses, more and more natural leaf piles will appear. Players can run through them, and scatter the leaves, and they will occasionally drop things. Fun! Feel free to suggest additions to their loot tables.
  • Added "Perfect Autumn Leaf", curiosity, forageable.

Key Fixes
-----------------------
  • Animals now eat only about 50% during winter.
  • Villages using "Revoke the Privilege" have since May of last year been capable of revoking personal claims older than themselves, provided that they are within 90% of the age of the claim being revoked. Apparently we never seem to have posted about this change, but we have now updated the description of the action to reflect the accurate situation.
  • We have taken some impression from the requests for a better default client, and have at least investigated some cursory features that we are looking to add to it. For now we have implemented a "Drop all of type to ground" acchord, which you can activate with Alt-Ctrl-LMB on an item.

Small Fixes
-----------------------
  • Being knocked out by catapult should now remove the Red-handed debuff, as a general consequence of being knocked out. Near key fix.

Today's Patch Item, for the fair price of $10, is the "Clockwork Hat".

All Gold subscribers have been awarded the "Clockwork Hat", free of charge.

In the Pipe
-----------------------
  • We have begun, and are primarily, working on a combat rewrite.
  • We would like to change the key layout for the item transfer chords to a more consistent setting, i.e...
    • Ctrl-LMB: Move an item
    • Ctrl-Shift-LMB: Move all items of type
    • Alt-LMB: Drop an item
    • Alt-Shift-LMB: Drop all items of type
... but are somewhat afraid of upsetting long standing precedents. Please advise with your 'pinions on the matter.
  • The main dev focus is the client rendering rewrite.
  • I will be streaming on Saturday at 19:00 UTC.
  • Time to... like us on Facebook? We hit a thousand likes last week, so that's cool, if Boomerbook things can ever be called that.

Enjoy!

Game Development: Season's Greetings

We've been developing, and here's what's new.

Image

New Implementations
-----------------------
  • Added Seasons. After a few months-ish of work, we have finally gotten our seasonality project to the point where we feel we can push it, thus:
  • We are in the last days of summer. Summer will soon turn to Fall. Fall will turn to Winter. To Spring, and to Summer again, and Haven now has seasons.
  • Fall, Winter and Spring, are ten RL days each, or 30 days total. Summer is 30 RL days total. A full Haven year is two RL months.
  • The implementation is mostly graphical, but there are some mechanical changes.
  • Herbs have seasonality, as do most small animals and some large ones.
  • Midges, for example, are nowhere to be found during winter.
  • Crops will fall fallow in winter. Fallow crops can be harvested at any time for a reduced amount of seeds of the relevant plant.
  • Cycling trellis crops will recede to their first cycle stage, and not grow, during winter.
  • Non-Cycling trellis crops will stop growing during winter.
  • Trees will lose their fruits and seeds in winter, and regain them during the summer. During summer and fall, trees will also respawn fruits with the traditional decay mechanic.
  • Rivers, and some ocean tiles, will freeze over during winter.
  • Snow can be shoveled away, revealing the true tile underneath it.
  • Temperature does not affect Hearthlings presently, so you need not worry about freezing. Generally, we haven't implemented many hazards.
  • There's still a lot that could be done, both graphically and mechanically, but this feels like a good starting point for future work.
  • When you log in tonight, there's a good chance that you won't notice any difference at all. Give it a few days.

Barring some artefacts that have been fixed, and some nice things that have been added, here's a taste:
Image

Key Fixes
-----------------------
  • Significantly reduced the initial harvest timer on natural wonders.

-----------------------
  • It feels very good to finally land this project. We see seasons as a significant milestone, a long-term goal achieved, and a great mine for future content, and it's also nice to be out of those woods (all puns intended).
  • We are going to leap right into our next big project, which will be a significant rewrite of combat, in the direction of a more aim- and movement-based system. We have several ideas that we'd like to try out, but nevertheless enter the project with some trepidation. It needs to be done, so it is what it is. I foresee that this project will take anywhere between one and three months, but God willing we will continue pushing some amount of smaller content patches as well.
  • I recently got an offer that I did not want to refuse, so I will for the forseeable future also be working part time with a Swedish indie studio, Warpzone Studios, founded by some old friends of mine, working on a Dwarven colony simulator, called Hammerting, and there's a cool twitter post about that here. I expect that it will be a lot of fun, and, since my primary employer will in a sense still be Seatribe, any windfall from the project will be shared with loftar, who will continue full time with several larger coding projects that we have in the pipe once the rendering rewrite is done, including but not limited to object controlled objects, and possibly server parallellization. Our weekly dev sessions will continue as they have, and I have a good chunk of time available to just do graphics as well. All in all it's good news for everyone, and I hope you can see it that way as well! Check out Hammerting! It's going to be awesome, and I might do a stream or two with it once it gets to that point. Will, on that note, also announce the regular monthly Haven stream shortly.
  • So, yeah, combat next. We're going to develop with a primary focus on PvP, and release some sort of test-build of that before we touch the animal AI, and try to work in PvE. The aim is to work iteratively, and fail fast if we have to fail, but that might be easier said than done. We go in optimistically, with a fair bit of fresh takes, and I think we'll have fun with it.
  • The main dev focus is the client rendering rewrite.
  • Time to... like us on Facebook?

Might be a good idea to update your clients, if you haven't.

Image

New Implementations
-----------------------
  • Added "Leather Basket", container.
  • Added "Heartsease", flower.

Key Fixes
-----------------------

Small Fixes
-----------------------
  • There are now turtles below.
  • Studying Queen Ant Wings should now complete quests to study ant wings.
  • Quail Feathers are now fine feathers. Reported here.
  • Grey Seal Hide hangs better on wall. Suggested here.

Game Development: Wandering Chevon

We've been developing, and here's what's new.

Image

New Implementations
-----------------------
  • Added "Meteoring", ring made from Falling Star materials.
  • Added "Chewy Chevon", food. Suggested here.

Credos
-----------------------
  • Wandering Sage: You have wandered the Hearth, deep in mystical contemplation on the signs and omens, and sought to commune with far flung Rowan trees, dark streams, and stands of Alder. Your learned wisdom exceeds most, and yet new depths of ignorance reveal themselves behind each new revelation of spirited nature. You can hear the spirits of things vast and faint whisper to you from the shadowy world beyond the veil of the Hearth, and they trace your footsteps wherever your wanderlust aching takes you. Meditation, and the journey as a goal in itself, are your lodestars. You have seen, in terrifying visions, how the Old Gods rode in chariots of Ash and Bronze, thundering over the ancient steppes in ages beyond reckoning, and your feet long always to trace those furrows. Embarking on the Wandering Sage's Pilgrimage promises...
    • Gain less Travel weariness.
    • +5% experience gain.
    • Reduced stamina drain from walking.
    • Frequent experience gain when seeing natural wonders.
    • Chance for additional increases to local qualities when completing quests.
    • Image
  • Wandering Sage depends on Mystic and Nomad.

Key Fixes
-----------------------
  • Changed satiation scaling to something significantly milder. Drinks still retain the old scaling. Consider this a band-aid.
  • Activating a wilderness beacon is now a crime of vandalism.
  • You can now evict people on wagons and chairs.

Small Fixes
-----------------------
  • Fixed a small issue with ant mobs in dungeons getting stuck behind pillars and such.
  • Curding Tubs should now always, in the presence of rennet, attempt to create a final curd out of any milk residue left in the tub. Point being that tubs should now always empty out fully if there is rennet still inside them, leaving no residue, which could avoid a problem of contaminated tubs.

Game Development: Fealty Fountain

We've been developing, and here's what's new.

Image

New Implementations
-----------------------
  • Added "Fealty Stone". The Fealty Stone is a small, easy to destroy, authority object, by which anyone can make small expansions to a Realm, at no cost in authority to the Realm. The idea being the people should be able to spread Realms small distances to cover themselves, their mines, and whatnot.
  • Added "Bell Fountain". Small fountain. Purely decorative. You need to fill it with water. Suggested here.

Small Fixes
-----------------------
  • Fixed a small bug by which kingdoms would double report Irminsuls and Monolith if they were claimed over again.

Game Development: Stalking Garden

We've been developing, and here's what's new.

Image

New Implementations
-----------------------
  • Added "Burrower Stalks", they pop up here and there, now and then, and drop cool beans. They need to sprout fully before dropping anything. Find one!

Key Fixes
-----------------------
  • Reduced the will requirements for using Charter Stones.
  • Siege Engines (Catapult and Battering Rams) no longer require Brimstone to repair.

Small Fixes
-----------------------
  • Blueberries, Chantrelles, Stinging Nettle, Clover, Cavebulb, Chiming Bluebell, Bloodstern, Stalagoom can no longer be grown in Garden pots. Gardener now allows you to plant Lady's Mantle, Yarrow, and Troll Mushrooms. Foraging is now hopefully a bit more viable. Looking to make it more so. Edit: Reverted by popular demand.
  • Reduced the base LP gains from studying gems.
  • Increased the base hunger reduction from Salt Crystals from 5% to 10%.
