Game Development: Ceiling Pear

We've been developing, and here's what's new.

Image

New Implementations
-----------------------
  • Added "Bug Collection", curiosity. You make a bug collection from six bugs, and the more varied bugs you use the better it gets. Note that all ant types simply count as one type for purposes of bug collections. Suggested various places, among others on stream and here.
  • Added stockpiles for everything, infinite capacity... or at least one for pears, capacity 30.

Key Fixes
-----------------------
  • Allowed fast travel across oceans using charterstones. This is not the final say in the balance between locality and community, but for now we're not heavily enough invested in the present ocean mechancics to motivate preventing it.

Small Fixes
-----------------------
  • Spars now announce the winner and loser, so that spectators can tell. Suggested here.
  • Fixed a problem with little ant wings not being dropped properly in Ant Dungeons.
  • Added an avatar camera for Cachalots when fighting.

Game Development: Rat Fries

We've been developing, and here's what's new.

Image

New Implementations
-----------------------
  • Finally fell for the oldest trope in video games and added fightable rats. There are now Caverats. And whiskers!

Key Fixes
-----------------------
  • All characters are now slowed down to 2/3rds of their speed when clipping against objects using the pushout mechanic. Discussed here.

Small Fixes
-----------------------
  • Fixed a small bug by which you could, under specific circumstances build into destroyed building sites.
  • Fixed a bug by which travel weariness did not always interact correctly with equipping and unequipping clothing.
  • Made it so that all recipes requiring Frying pans to make also require the discovery of Frying pan. Reported here.
  • Credos now present their LP cost as you start them. Kind of discussed here.
  • Fixed a bug with the "Cancel" button on screenshot uploads did not work properly.

Game Development: Beating Chest Totem

We've been developing, and here's what's new.

Image

New Implementations
-----------------------
  • Added "Beat Chest", emote.
  • Added "Pumpkin Stew", food.

Key Fixes
-----------------------
  • Catapults & Battering Rams now take about four hours to destroy by hand.
  • Made it so that soak starts building up when you complete a building, rather than when you place the construction sign. This is a reversion of a change we made way back in 2015, that we couldn't find an argument for in 2019. Let us know if you have one.
  • The warning message for siege engines now informs you as to all types of siege engines which have been activated near your claim.
  • Made it so that only the captain of a Knarr can travel home with it.
  • Adjusted the wonder gathering timer. You now have a two minute inital timer for the first item you gather, but subsequent items are gathered as before.

Small Fixes
-----------------------
  • Rabbits should now breed more like rabbits. Suggested here and here.
  • Adjusted the scaling of pepper a bit in light of this. Should now be less harsh.
  • Made it so that you can't drive a Knarr if you give away the key after having manned the helm.
  • Fixed a bug by which you could use ever glowing embers to fuel things indefinitely.
  • Fixed a bug by which you didn't get kills for animals bleeding to death when fleeing from you. Reported here.
  • Fixed a bug with the death camera sometimes not working.
  • Fixed a bug by which boreworms would spawn exclusively in water, or when mining. You should now be able to encounter them normally.
  • Reduced the difficulty modifier for steel locks.
  • Removed some items not actually placed in the world from quest lists.
  • Fixed a bug with ancestors requesting roasting spits.
  • Green and black tea leaves are now leaves, primarily for stockpiling purposes. Kind of suggested here.
  • Fixed a bug by which a (dead/KOed) character dropped from a Knarr would block entrance to the Knarr.
  • Fixed a bug by which wild animals would sometimes hang around forever tethered, even if untamed.
  • Fixed a bug by which animals would sometimes get stuck without being able to fight back in combat.
  • Fixed a bug by which animals would not break corpses if their soul hadn't "moved on" from the death screen.

  • Small patch, as we're working on something bigger. Might be a while.
  • We were held off from patching for the past two weeks due to RL things, and unfortunately there may be more downtime over the summer, as we both have various and somewhat unsynched family commitments and such. We will aim to be diligent, keep you posted on a week-to-week basis, and as always, the great work usually continues in some capacity at all times.
  • Considering: PvP as a key driver of long-term interest and events in the game.
  • The main dev focus is the client rendering rewrite.

Game Development: Perry Flotsam

We've been developing, and here's what's new.

Image

New Implementations
-----------------------
  • Added Knarr Flotsam. Whenever a Knarr is destroyed, it now spawns a number of Knarr flotsams. Flotsams act more or less as temporary chairs in the water, and you can cling onto them in hope of rescue.
  • Added "Perry", pear cider, made from pears. Desatiates: Primarily 'Shrooms, secondarily Meat and Creepies & Crawlies
  • Added "Indigo Cap", mushroom.
  • Broke out a new satiation category "Sweets & Desserts", primarily from "Bread". Suggested here.

Key Fixes
-----------------------
  • Increased the time it takes to smash Battering Rams and Catapults by hand from two to three hours.
  • Palisades should no longer cascade if smashed by hand, fixing a number of problems we've had recently with wall cascades used to break into bases.
  • Significantly eased satiations on several high end food items, primarily cheeses.

Small Fixes
-----------------------
  • Gathering resources from natural wonders now takes about 2 minutes per unit harvested. The idea being to make life a little harder for alt gatherers, and to give some chance to contest the items. Unsure if meaningful.
  • You may now drink grape juice, and apples give more cider than previously. Reported here.

  • Small patch, as we're working on something bigger. Might be a while.
  • Considering:
    • In light of the change made to wall cascades: To make it so that palisade segments below a certain amount (25%, say) of health, can always be destroyed by hand. Would allow you to remodel walls without cascade damage, but would perhaps have more potential security implications than it'd be worth. Desired?
    • Additional catch up mechanics in the same vein as the one we added to questing last patch, by which players receive bonuses in relation to how far behind the global server lead they are. Food? Curios? Metal quality? Bad idea?

Game Development: Cigar Box

We've been developing, and here's what's new.

Image

New Implementations
-----------------------
  • Time gated non-credo quests. There is now a fixed amount of non-credo quests you are allowed to complete per unit of time (about 3 per RL day), but that amount is buffed while you lie below the global server leader in number of completed quests (Up to a maximum of about 12 per RL day). Some steps have also been taken to reduce the randomness in the rewards given. You can buffer a significant amount of quests, so there shouldn't be a major rush to complete them instantly.
  • Added "Cigar Box", curiosity.

Key Fixes
-----------------------
  • Made it so that satiations disappear faster the more satiated you are. The intention being to incentivize eating at lower satiation levels. Satiations generally disappear in about two days, rather than one, to compensate.
  • Also made it so that satiations build up from 0% to 100%, rather than decrease from 100% to 0%. Purely visual change.

Small Fixes
-----------------------
  • All non-water drinks now restore about 10% energy per gulp you drink of them. Milk restores about 2%. Scales with quality. The drinks' preffered drinking vessel matters.
  • Can now leash animals to mine beams (the metal ones).
  • Added string to the bear cape recipe. Suggested here.

Game Development: Mead & Cider

We've been developing, and here's what's new.

Image

New Implementations
-----------------------
  • Added "Mead", for now, at least, you can only ferment honey water straight to mead, but we do have some future plans for fruit and spice meads, and such. Desatiates: Primarily Vegetables, secondarily Game and Nuts & Seeds.
  • Added "Cider", for now, at least, you can only make apple cider, but we do have some future plans for more generic fruit ciders. Desatiates: Primarily Poultry, secondarily Shrooms and Offal.

Key Fixes
-----------------------
  • Contemplating hunger from last time, we came up with a less invasive change that we thought we could try, thus: Hunger now scales with satiations. I.e., if you are down to 0% satiation in a particular foodgroup, you will not gain either hunger or FEPs from eating it. This should resolve at least the miner complaint about not being able to eat for energy with some ease. Not sure this makes sense lore wise, but it might make mechanical sense. You are not punished in terms of hunger for eating at lower satiation levels.
  • Catapults & Battering Rams now take about two hours to destroy by hand.

Small Fixes
-----------------------
  • Fixed a couple of bugs with opening flower menus while other actions are being performed, and doing retarded things like turning a roasting spit from a cave level below, and such.
  • Fixed a bug with the starvation wound not updating properly.
  • Fixed a bug by which it was impossible to teach the last point in combat moves present in the starting deck.
  • Fixed a bug by which you could get to the other old boot without having learned the first old boot.
  • Fixed a bug by which Knarrs always took the sketch slot as a zero quality input.
  • Fixed a bug by which corpses, if carried overhead while swimming and drowning, would disappear, rather than drop in the water.

Game Development: Bog Turtle Boogaloo

We've been developing, and here's what's new.

Image

New Implementations
-----------------------
  • Added "Bog Turtle", small animal.

Key Fixes
-----------------------
  • Made it so that unclaimed walls no longer require siege engines to demolish. They still have soak. Lowered soak of palisades.
  • Made it so that Border Cairns cannot be claimed using a private claim. Both suggested here.
  • Catapults & Battering Rams now take about an hour to destroy by hand.
  • Lobsters should now actually be possible to catch. Fulgurite cape awarded to loftar.

Small Fixes
-----------------------
  • Fixed a bug causing produce from natural trees to be of decimal quality, rather than Q10.
  • You can now stockpile apples again.
  • Fixed a small bug by which it was possible to enter through a visitor gate with aggro using a bed.

Image

Divine Intervention: Helfors/Never Neverland, Roasted

As we were looking into lowering the palisade soaks for this week's patch, we came to look at the top server stats, and found some real outliers in the stat race. Looking further at them, it turned out that the players involved had been getting massive FEP gains from single food items. Further investigation eventually revealed that the cause of these insane FEP values was the ability to somehow apply Food buffs (Laurel leaf, Cave Lantern, Domestic Honey, perhaps others), repeatedly, to roasting spits. The roasting spits effectively had buffs in the 700k+ range, putting FEP values of roasted foods in the thousands. We still do not know how this was done, but have installed safety measures to remove egregious buffs on load. If anyone knows how this happened, we are interested.

Analysis
  • We believe the longtime consequences of this to be fairly limited. The abuse seems localized entirely to denizens of the den of iniquity known as Helfors, and we believe we can scrub the server clean of buffs, and terminate offending characters.
  • Stats acheived through this were around 1.1k.
  • The crazy has been going on for about a month.
  • Offending parties have not been particularly interested in explaining what has happened, nor displayed much recognition of culpability.

Consequences
  • All characters who have eaten forbidden fruit have been terminated.
  • The villages of "Helfors" and "Surprise", along with the entire Realms of "Never Neverland" and "MOTHERLAND", are deemed forfeit.
  • We will bust the gates of "Helfors" and "Surprise" open, nuke them selectively, and remove the coronation stones of "Never Neverland" and "MOTHERLAND".

Meditations
  • Erratic behaviors that put you way ahead in the rat race should be reported immediately. Exploitation of such abuses will be a net negative. A short PM asking if something unexpected is intended is cheap nuke insurance.
  • I hate doing this.

Enjoy.
