The case of the disappearing 'stuff'

Postby Tergeron » Tue Jun 22, 2010 7:54 am

I'm relatively new to the game (been playing for around 2-3 days now) and after just checking some of my containers and my crops I've noticed the items are gone. Now, unless there's some mechanic in the game where items and crops will miraculously sprout fins/legs and leave my Island without even saying goodbye to me while they set off to the sunset, it means I've got a theft problem. But I have no idea who's committing these crimes because I haven't gotten Ranging yet, so I have a few questions.

First off, assuming I pick up Ranging AFTER the crime took place would I be able to see the scents and possibly find some vigilante to take care of the problem for me? Next, I have no claim set up because I wanted to save and invest in other skills and stats first; Does this mean that no actual crime took place because it wasn't on claimed land, or will I still be able to find the scents when/if I pick up Ranging? And lastly, who's up for a good ole' fashion witch hunt if I can find said criminal (Pickfork's will be supplied, bring your own torch).

Also, in case anyone's wondering what was stolen they took 4 rabbit skins from a tanning tub, 2 q40ish boars tusks, some q30ish clay, around 4 60qish Hemp seeds and their related products and prior to that a wickerbasket with my fishing pole and some roots for string (It could of been decay, though the other baskets I made around the same time are in perfect condition).

Unclaimed stuff is free stuff.

yeah, don't do this. you need a claim, whoever robbed you didn't need any skills to do it, they didn't leave any scents and your chances of finding them to reclaim your rabbit skins and taproots is pretty much zero.

Actually I have an update you'll probably find funny. I managed to find my stuff in a boat next to a cave near an abandoned village I've passed by before. After passing by a few times on a trip to recycle some crops I noticed the boat was still there so I decided to take a peak inside the crates he had loaded and lo' and behold my stuff along with various other items were loaded up. Instead of tracking him down in the cave and confronting him I did the right thing... I took the crates and put them on my boat, then lifed his boat and walked for about a minute or two inland and laid it down in a random spot. I'm probably the luckiest guy in this game so far.

EDIT: As for the stake claim, it's the first thing I did when I noticed stuff missing.

you should probably get some rope and glue ASAP and make a palisade.

Yeah, I've had dicks steal stuff too..

Just had someone steal a boat... Like.. who does that. Is a boat that valuable that you need to steal that of all things?
Back, I guess

I once stole a boat, simply to be able to travel on my travels faster. I left, however, some of my boar tusks and a bit of rustroot in a nearby container for perhaps some sort of compensation for my theft.
I once was a man of murder, grief, and sadness. No more.

This guy just took it and ran.

I was in the middle of nowhere in the uppermost Supergrid, and I decided to camp for the night.

Came back this morning and the boat was gone, yet nothing else was touched. Was there really a reason to do so? Right next to my sleeping body too.

Possibly they just needed the boat, not your stuff.
If you keep focusing on the shadow behind, you will not see the light in front of you.

Being successful isn't just about hard work and succeeding, it is also about picking yourself up when you fail.
