Frankly there is no truly safe way to leave scents. but there are several ways you can spot activity.
Look at decay. If they have a palisade and its all red with whole in it, then its prolly inactive. Same goes for the rest of the buildings. if its a village, look at stuff near where you're stealing, if the outside is decayed, don't assume the undecayed area inside is coincidence.
Crops. Look on your minimap where the crops are. if it shows only a few, or none of the tile plowed underneath the crops, for all the crops that's another sign of inactivity.
Animal troughs. If there is food in the animal trough, then there is most likely someone there feeding it. if there is no food and a bunch of mudflat tiles from the cows grazing, then its probably inactive.
And of course, the safest bet is to never leave scents at all.

Unless there are personal claims on the village claim, then there's no pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. Er, village. Whatever.

In novaria live my friend(only 1 villager in this village). In this moment he havent got a time to play (have some business in real life). He ask me to look for his village. Don't try to stole in this vil. I often come and see for scents. My friend coming soon.

One villager? OK, but the rest of Nowaria? Is the entire village off limits or is it possible for us to loot the rest of the village?

It's possible, but if i find at least one scent, thief will be punished. Nowaria is under my control again.
