The problem is an attacker is always prepared and can gather his whole force at a set time. The defender however will usually just be following his daily routine. Meaning most people probably won't even be logged in at the point of an attack, others are not equipped or prepared for battle. I have been in such battles (mostly as an attacker in world 2) often enough to know what will happen. If those unprepared folks start to fight back they will usually get picked off one by one.
Edit: There are scenarios where fighting back might work. I once went to Xanadu to summon a murderer with gato alone in world 2. Four or more guys were online in their fort at that time, organizing quickly to repair the brickwall against us bashing it. At some point they must have panicked though I guess, which should never happen to a dedicated fighting force. They stopped reparing, some logged off, others didn't manage to do so in time. So gato and me were able to wreck their force and their place just being 2 guys vs 4 or 5.
