You should have done some research first.

I give a good explanation as to why it's incorrect and you think a 'no' followed by an insult is a good enough retort?

How about some evidence to support your claim? You're all in favour of research, why don't you do some yourself? Until you can find proof that humans have two or more brains, using plural when addressing a single person is just not right.

As it happens, I did look into it. After KoE's suggestion that we have a language barrier, I scoured the internet for a good half hour trying to find it in use. It was a marginal success; I only ever found it alongside horrendous spelling and other miscellaneous mistakes.

If you can give a good reason as to why you're right and I'm wrong, I'll hold my hands high and apologise. I won't hold my breath.

Since this is slowly becoming an argument that has nothing to do with the topic, might I suggest we take this to PM's? Your call.

EDIT: I'm an english librarian, and we don't accept colloquialisms in official language. So please excuse me while I defend proper english as competently as I can.

"Brains" is acceptible in certain phrases. "I beat my brains out trying to understand why people are arguing over this."

However, "Use your brains" is an incorrect use when addressing a single individual. It should be "Use your brain", instead.

Thus, you are both wrong, but I support Night's defense of the innocent guy who was simply asking a polite question. There was no need for the rudeness, from anybody. :)

Firstly you gave entirely no reason why it was incorrect, you said, ''that's worng, btw i are librarieanrlorlrolzzlzolrz evaryting i wroted is corrract :geek: ''

And at no point did I insult you, I merely pointed out that you must have been a bad librarian.

Now lets start some research.
--1 minute--
OK...Research finished

Typed in ''brain dictionary'' in google
clicked on the first link.

Oh and how surprised i was when i saw that half the times brain sas used in plural form when adressing one person.
I can only surmise that they or, do not have google in England, or that, goodness gracious, you did not do any research.

I will copy paste some Idioms which i am sure they also use in !!!ENGLAND!!!

—Idioms
10.
beat one's brains out, Informal. to try very hard to understand and work out a problem, remember something, etc.: She beat her brains out studying for the exam.
11.
have something on the brain, to have an obsession; be occupied with: Lately I seem to have food on the brain.
12.
pick someone's brains, to obtain information by questioning another person rather than by seeking it independently: He refused to prepare for the exam but counted on being able to pick his roommate's brains.

As you see 2/3 of the written idioms have plural adressing one person.

Ninja'd

@moogie, it is entirely correct to use 'brains' when adressing one individual. That's the whole point of this argument.

edit: @ nightsway: this video is making more then one point.

Then I stand duly corrected. I'm no expert; I'm not even a librarian. ;)

Shall we settle for "being right is far more important than not sounding like an uptight arse", then?

Next time, if you have something to say to me, take it to pm's Wolfie. I have seen a few of the idiots ou have recruited, and honestly, I have been meaning to confront you on this. Where do you get the supposed right to run this place? Last i checked you were neither Lawspeaker, nor chieftain. In fact, the Lawspeaker of Xendar (yea, fuck you I said it) should be recruiting those whom he leads, not you. You may have been a bigshot at BNL, but We are a community, not a youmunitty. So please, get over your self, and use your brain for a change.

Completely unfounded and a generally stupid comment. My spelling is perfect, I haven't even used 'lol' and I think you'll find I did post an explanation to my claim. I won't repeat it, because if you didn't read it the first time, you won't the second time.

Continue to use the term if you choose, but it doesn't take much of a brain to realise that using a plural in a singular sense is just not grammatically correct, regardless of how it has progressed from informal to formal. If you keep that attitude, the dictionary will be so much diffrant in fuchar jenerachons, enit.

As for that link you posted, congratulations on tearing the final shred off of this otherwise moderately intelligent conversation.

You've managed to avoid my original point. Your topic is vague and you were rude.

Intelligent conversation?

It looked more like a flamewar to me, one that you ignited by completely unnecessarily commenting on his words.
