s HOUSTON -- Toronto FCs first point on the road this season gave new head coach Paul Mariner something positive to focus on during a week of off-field distractions. After giving up a two-goal lead with under 20 minutes left to play, the Reds held on for a 3-3 draw against the Houston Dynamo on Wednesday night in MLS action. "We knew it was going to be difficult the second half, but I am so proud of the lads," said Mariner after his second game as coach. "We had a fantastic performance in the first half. I thought we were terrific. A point away from home against Houston is fantastic." Houstons Will Bruin scored in the 73rd and 90th minutes to dash Torontos hopes of getting three points. The draw spoiled two first-half goals by Danny Koevermans and Jeremy Halls first career MLS goal, but can be seen as a positive after three Toronto players -- Miguel Aceval, Luis Silva and Nick Soolsma -- were arrested for public intoxication earlier in the week and sent home before the game. Mariner said Toronto, who jumped out to a 3-1 lead at halftime, had moments in the second half but not as many as in the first half. "We knew the game wasnt over," he said. "Forty-five minutes doesnt get you anywhere in football. Weve been there many times. The first 10 minutes was key. We had to come out and weather the storm. Then, we just sort of settled down, and they threw the kitchen sink at us." Hall scored in the 13th minute when he banged a shot off both posts before it went in. Bobby Boswells header seven minutes later knotted the score at 1-1. Koevermans scored in the 22nd minute, nailing a shot off a cross from Eric Avila into the left net, and in the 45th minute when he headed a Julian de Guzman pass from 16 yards out to extend the lead to 3-1. "Definitely, we come into every game to win," defender Ashtone Morgan said. "We were up 3-1 at the half, and we thought we were going to be in cruise control. They threw the big boys up there and scored two goals." Bruin cut the lead to 3-2, hitting a shot from the top of the box into the upper right net before nailing a header for the tie. Houston (5-4-5) extended its home unbeaten streak to 13 games, dating back to a 2-0 loss to Columbus on June 18, 2011. Toronto (1-10-1) remains last in the Eastern Conference, but there is hope that the team can turn things around. "We are still the lowest of the low," Koevermans said. "We got a point on the road. You lose it in the last minute, the points, then you are disappointed. I hope this is a start to a new era to get more points." Mariner said he saw improvement from Saturdays 2-0 loss at Sporting KC. "The thing as a coach is you have to get the players to buy into your plan, and the guys bought into it as you can see," Mariner said. "The thing about Saturday is that we created a lot of chances, but we didnt quite take our chances. Tonight we created some very good chances. Im delighted by their performance."

Robert Mayer made 35 saves as the Hamilton Bulldogs defeated the Rockford IceHogs 3-1 in the American Hockey League on Friday. Hamilton head coach Sylvain Lefebvre singled out Mayers performance for praise, alongside that of his special teams units. "The guys battled hard tonight," said Lefebvre. "Robert Mayer was solid in net and made some big saves at key times. "We came up with big goals and the power play came up big as well. The penalty kill did a good job, and if you win the special teams battle, more often than not you win the game." Gabriel Dumont, Patrick Holland and Olivier Fortier added goals for the Bulldogs (12-18-3), who snapped a three-game losing streak -- in which they failed to score a single goal -- in their return to home ice. Ben Smith had the lone goal for the IceHogs (17-15-2), while goalie Alec Richards stopped 25-of-28 shots. The visitors got on the board early in the first when defenceman Shawn Lalondes wrist shot from the point bounced to Smith, who quickly gathered the puck and shot it past Mayer from in tight at 1:53. A lively bounce off the end boards nearly doubled the IceHogs lead minutes later, as the puck took a quick deflection and ended up at Mayers near post. Hamiltons Michael Bournival was gifted a chance to score with 10 minutes remaining in the first when a Rockford giveaway put the puck directly on the forwards stick with a clear path to goal. But Richards produced an sharp split save to foil the break and preserve the IceHogs lead. The Bulldogs looked set to conclude their 10th-consecutive period without a goal as the first wound to a close. But Mike Blunden cycled the puck to the point, and a Dumont slapshot was tipped in by Holland with milliseconds remaining on the clock to end Hamiltons scoreless drought. Holland believed that the goal was the culmination of a strong all-around shift from his line to conclude the period. "We had a reallyy good shift there and were putting on a lot of pressure," he said.dddddddddddd "I felt like I had a goal earlier in the shift and I managed to hit the post. "I think (the goal) was going in without my tip, but Ill gladly touch it. I think it was pretty close to the buzzer, but Im fortunate that it went in and it really helped the team." Dumont added that the streak-busting goal was a confidence booster for the previously slumping Bulldogs. "Especially getting that goal to tie it with 0.1 seconds left in that period, it was really a good feeling for us," said Dumont. "It was good to get out of that slump. "We always make it a little hard on ourselves, but we found a way out of that bad streak." Bournival once again squandered a golden opportunity two minutes into the second period. He and defenceman Frederic St. Denis skated in on a two-on-one break, with St. Denis floating a pass over the stick of the reaching Rockford defender that Bournival could not properly corral. The hosts took the lead at 17:11 of the second with a rare power-play goal. Rockfords Jimmy Hayes had served 57 seconds of his tripping minor when Dumont set up in front of the IceHogs net and deflected a St. Denis point shot past Richards for his second point of the game. The Bulldogs lead swelled at 5:51 of the third, as Fortier proved opportunistic in front of goal. Hamilton held the puck in Rockfords end immediately following a power play, and Philippe Lefebvre shovelled an unremarkable shot toward the net from the right circle that caught Richards flat-footed. The goaltender sent a heavy rebound into the slot, and Fortier alertly collected the puck and fired it into the gaping net. The Bulldogs head coach was impressed by the approach that led his team to find the back of the net on Friday, a willingness to crash the net that he believed to be a must. "We cant get away from what we do best, and thats what we do best," said Lefebvre. "We get to the net and take the puck there. We crash and bang. "Thats our team. Thats our identity."
