Although I do kinda get why alt "abuse" is unsettling (cf. "weeee, look how much free bread I got!"), the game itself seems set up to encourage the use of various specialized alts for industry, farming/sericulture, combat, etc. Especially when a person tends to play in a more anti-social or hermit-y (eremitic?) style and can't rely on having neighbors or village-mates to divide the labor.

the only thing you're abusing by alting in bread is your potential stats.

Bread alts are pretty pointless (how hard is it to find an apple tree?), but alts are often used to remove the better part of danger from the game. Don't want to lose your main in a cave-in? Have an alt do it. Don't want to have your main's theft tracked? Alt! I think the game probably would be better if you couldn't have alts, though I can't imagine how this would be even possible since anyone can have multiple accounts. Indeed, multi-account alts are better than several alts on a single account as it allows dual-boxing.

the flaw in your argument is that mining actually requires some investment in a character now, and criminal alts are an even more significant investment.

I see it like this: you wanna get bear skins and boar stuff? Take the risk and go get it! You want metals? Take the risk and cry(if thats your thing) when it fails and celebrate when it works. You don't wanna die? don't mine, don't hunt, be safe and poor. Ooor jorb could just put the murder skill away from animals and put the cave-ins away. because when you make it hard people will try to cheat. I mean whats the point in cave-ins when people make alts?
