You can trade for better resources, you can kill their current owners and take them by force, or you can simply steal (ball) clay and pray you don't get tracked down and executed. There are plenty of way to get good resources if you put some effort into it, no matter how late you come to the scene. Sure, early joiners get to take resources with no resistance, but they don't hold onto them for long if they're weak.

Just because the game isn't your cup of tea doesn't mean it's flawed. It's a competitive MMORPG, if you want a cooperative one go play ATitD, I hear it's pretty good.
