I've never seen a forum with hierarchical threading that wasn't fugly.

Are you talking about the old bulletin board type deals that they still use on sites like slashdot and livejournal? If so I'd have to agree with Potjeh, those are a pain to read.

I know; as I said, it's a pity that there doesn't seem to be any reasonable UI for them. Having used them quite a bit, however, I like them very much in every aspect except the UI. One of their greatest aspects is that threads can derail in any number of tangents without it hurting the discussion at large. Usenet and mailing lists work quite a bit better than Slashdot and other web sites, since one normally uses a local user agent that can implement a better UI. (The comparative aspect being key, however; it's still not good.) I've long tried to conjure a good UI for them, but I have yet to succeed, unfortunately.
