Change to theft scents

Postby Granger » Thu Nov 25, 2010 2:52 pm

Problem
Thief creates alt to do the actual theft.
That alt does his bidding, transfers stolen objects to a handfull of packmule alts (who are his his village), builds HF in wilderness and awaits termination.
Packmules build HFs in wilderness too, port to their village, logout there and wait till scents have expired.

Surely you can track and summon the thieving alt, but it is recreated with ease within a short timespan for cheap.

Stolen goods are unaccessible, and no way to find out to which village the packmules belong to (since you can only track the 'stolen object' to the HFs somewhere in the void).
You have no possibility to access them in any way, no way to retaliate.

When scents are expired the alts simply login at their village, build a new HF and the cycle starts again.

Solution
Enable theft scent to summon toon holding 'stolen object' in inventory or equipped.
Same mechanic as with original perpetuator.
This way thiefs at least need to protect their packmule alts HFs.

Next Problem
We then need a way to find out if an item is tainted, so you don't obtain summonable items by accident.

Solution
Enable user to right-click a beautiful dream on objects, in case it's trackable (=scent for it exists) the dream turns into a horrible nightmare (same as dream, but red and different text).

Any suggestions or comments about this?

IIRC, Loftar has talked about some mechanic to fight alt vaulting, where either all items in inventory drops to ground upon logout , or, less radical - items in inventory can be stolen from owners hearth fire when character is offline, leaving theft scents as normal.
I guess a mechanic like this would demand at least a way to hang your keyring from your belt, preferably have some other containers that can hang from belt as well, such as e.g. tool box(can hold axe, saw, weapons, bow etc.), seed bag etc. Also, I assume any items on your paperdoll toon would be safe even while offline.

Would this solve your problem?

I like your idea for checking if an item is tainted.

Wouldn't really solve my problem.

OK, in case Loftar would implement the 'drop inventory on logout' feature my problem would be gone, since i would be too.

The soltuion with the stealing from HF wouldn't solve the problem with equipable items (eg. armor), they would still be inaccessible for reposession purposes.

I stole three chests from a Nazi mine camp on my main account, myself. There was even a pile of skeletons at the mine entrance, and I don't even have ridiculously high int/stealth. If someone was gonna steal something of value, wouldn't that something be guarded by layers of palisade in a land claim? And if they're really worried, they could clearcut the area to deplete it of natural resources for enemies to use. I assume you'd notice if someone was breaking in if you were guarding something very valuable... if it's not of amazing value, then you can probably just replace it. They probably wouldn't be able to break through those palisades so easily with a disposable thief alt...
Though I hear people talking about jumping over walls, in which case fixing that is probably more important.
