Leeches.
I was new and didn't even know they existed, so after walking several swamps my health started to drop, slowly and painfully.
I could only watch as my poor guy walked aimlessly with nothing but his impending doom on his mind until it was too late.

The server isn't Java, unless they changed that in Hafen. (If I recall correctly it was coded in C++.)

The moment they open-source the server code, people will constantly be investigating it for potential exploits. As Haven is an MMO, abuse of this leads to permanent consequences that can't be fixed without a (universally hated) rollback, if even with that - rollbacks only work if the problem is found out quickly after it's caused, you can't just roll back to a month ago without having half the playerbase quit. Every change and addition they make would cause exploit problems over and over again. (In a limited fashion it already happens but problems would increase at least tenfold if people could actually look at the source.)

They should try and convert the client to C++ and server side to PHP. *Edit

After that they could run the client through a obfuscator and release. The only people dedicated enough and with the knowledge to change anything would be people with machine code knowledge. Bots would still be a problem tho. I was mainly concerned with hacks. As I am for my game.

I highly doubt they will ever release server code, that would be begging for cheaters.
