Add a balloon upgrade to boats... Dirigibles.

It can fly over water and land.
It can only be attacked by ranged weapons, which makes it nearly invulnerable.
It can circumvent palisades, brick walls, and all other defenses... by simply flying over them.

Oooh, and maybe it could allow mining clouds for silver and rainbows for gold!
