This has already probably been suggested or thought of, but a skill that lets you chart out an area and put it on a map would be good.
Obviously you'll need a skill for making paper/papyrus first, but once you've got that consumable, you could turn it into a mini game.

Get the player to stand in an area, activate his mapping skill with a certain size map, and then generate a number of way points in the area he has to visit and chart out his map from.

Once completed the map can be given to anyone who can activate it to see a map of the local area, larger than the mini map but smaller than the full world map (probably not a "you are here" button)

Bonus points if you let the map maker annotate the map with towns and named interest points ^_^
