It's not about being afraid of death, it's realizing that if he suicides in the water (which means he realizes he may lose the fight) he than won't give his pursuers any of that 1% murder LP from his kill and they won't be able to take his gear and other stuff in his inventory.

Rangers drown them selves all the time. Its just a better way to die, you get to keep your place from getting raided (provided you they dont know where you live without scents) and you keep your gear. with the loss of only 25%lp and stats
