Lawspeaker is the main role and can do all government related tasks. Chieftain can do somethings like invite people to the village. The wiki probably has a better explanation. A good idea is to have an alt be a chieftain so that if you die you can invite your reincarnated self back.

Chieftain = Battle leader or something similar. Get access to Cha boosting clothing. Can invite people to village and can name/teleport hirdesman to themself. Far as I know you can have 2 hirdesman, the teleport costs weariness and a small amount of village authority.
