Does it have to be building signs or can you put anything to occupy that tile space? Such as--but not limited to--a boulder?

I'm not sure what you're asking about, but anything with a hitbox should work for most of the possibilities you're asking about

You attach it to a crossroad and then you can teleport to its destination. It is a one way thing so you can teleport to them but they cannot teleport to you. Unless you also provide them with a crossroad sign, that is.

There are two types of those signs:

• The first one is allows you to connect a crossroad to the destination of where that crossroad came from. For example, if the crossroad sign came from outside of Odditown and you right click the sign to the crossroad in your home, it will allow you to teleport to exterior of Odditown. Sufficient travel weariness is needed. Naturally, you should not give anyone a sign to your interior crossroad.
• The second one allows you to connect a pathing route for a milestone allowing your character to automatically follow the route that the crossroad is connected towards. You can only connect the sign to a certain distant from the milestone and each one connected to a route will extend the range.
