Only the top of the cliff does not snap to grid with the normal alignment of the grid while the bottom and side do. Mountain cliffs snap to grid in all situations though. I still do not recommend using them as walls though.

Do not do this. Shift-placing a palisade will not let you build further sections.

And I say just wrap your palisade under the cliff.

You can extend it just like normal if it's unaligned from the grid. You're just going to be more or less incapable of lining up a second cornerpost to place a gate.

The practicalities of lining up walls on the inner-grid within a tile is beyond practical, and that's still only if you know exactly what you're doing. Without knowing what you're doing, it's just more hassle than it's worth.

As much as it might seem convenient to use the cliff as part of your wall, the added risk of some bug being used to get in is not worth it in the long run. Wrap it around the cliff for your own safety. (Do you want the looming thought that you half-assed your wall and are less secure because of it?)

Do trolls spawn when straight-line mining?

I don't see why they wouldn't. They should spawn just as normal.

Crapola! I think I've screwed myself, I may have begun construction a little close to the cliff, so I don't know If I'll be able to build a palisade and get in the house. Dangit.
