if so, how do I send them from the outbox, and why do they go there anyhow ?

They will go from there when the recipient notices them and reads them.
Its like storage, lol.

I'm currently sort of hermit-ing right now. Is it advisable to build a village idol? I want to build one so I can eventually make some easier trades, but I'm iffy about it because I'm not sure I can maintain the authority by myself since I'm only able to play a few hours a day rather than 8+ like some.

Village idol authority is pretty easy to keep up as long as you study some curios, don't build too many banners and don't use the Law speaker/chieftan actions too much.

A couple of pages ago I asked the same question and the answer is double-good-plus:

1) You can easily keep it up with just one character using renewable curios of any decent quality (if you have even raised your int and char slightly, that will help immensely too!) like strawdolls, feather dusters, wishbones, ...
2) you don't need to keep it up at all in the first place (if you, like me, are going to have a personal claim over the parts that matter to you) since crossroads and villageporting still works without any authority.
