Well you are free to plant anywhere you want, but if you want a full sized tree, 5x5 is needed. I apologize if my wording makes you believe that I stated something else.

the 5x5 is just because in their final stages, trees are more than 1x1 big, so with each tree being in a 5x5 square they're all well clear of each other. I always plant my trees 3 tiles from the wall (so it's a 4x5 for that tree) and there's never been any problem.

How to dig long straight lines in cave without supports?

Oh, ok... what I just did wrong now? I wanted to dig zig-zag tunnel (green line), so there must be no cave-ins. But when I turned to north I catched cave-in just above my head. Damn.
I gonna re-phrase my question. How the hell can I dig deep into rocks without supports? Because _all_ my nodes are deep there and I just can't get nuggets for supports without diggin deep first.

So list of things which' quality does not matter. AFAIK buckets, beehives and barrels have no effect on their associated products. Containers and houses of course would seem to have no quality, or does it affect how many decay htis they can sustain?
