How often do animals eat?

Can metal saws still be made?
[I have discovered all the prerequisite items with my smith and I have all the skills but I can't craft a metal saw]

Can I make a village by myself? Is it easy to maintain?

Yes you can if you can kill bears and deer.
It's very easy to maintain if you get LP daily. And anyway if you surround it with walls and protect it, the authority doesn't even matter.

Is it worth doing, in that case? What are the benefits? I only ask because Lawspeaking is one of the few skills I haven't picked up yet, and I don't know if it's worth sinking 20k LP into it.

100% worth it.
You can bash an alt's hearth fire and use him to trade.
You can make crossroads.
You can make a lawspeaker alt and teleport around, for example to Brodgar (this is what I do, except no lawspeaker alt)

Fantastic! Thanks for your help :)

I understand that deer are difficult to kill, at least for newbs. I have a Q36 sling and 32MM - how far off am I from being able to kill one? I've killed every other type of animal so far without a hitch.

Try luring the deer away from his herd, he will heal less frequent.
Other than that, I think it should be possible killing one with that sling and MM. Maybe like 40-50mm? I'd try it now.
Hope you have a great day

It's much easier killing him unarmed at the noob stage, you need like 5 UA to do it and all combat skills.
And if you're a noob at it, then lure him to a lake and it will be 100% easier.
I think I posted somewhere how to do it in river shallow though.

Final question (I promise!) What should be my priority atm? I have a little settlement guarded by a pali and a cliff; I want to try and secure it and extend it by claiming and palisading some land on the other end of the cliff. Should I do that first, or get lawspeaking and a village?

Your priority before palisading, before ANYTHING should be claiming. Because someone can claim your palisade and plant a ram, without vandalism you can do nothing about it.
Claim your land, then palisade the whole cliff just in case, then get lawspeaking and a village claim.
Good luck, and if you need anything, ask here lol, it helps others who have the same problem when you ask and it gets answered.
