Once I get a village, assuming my village claim covers my personal claim, can I then remove my personal claim? (For LP refund)

No. You can, but it's not a good thing to do at all.
Edit: That is, if you're a hermit most people claim the whole village claim and more.

Yes, you can. No idea what noobies on about. the only thing is, you can't give permissions to non-townies so having a personal claim gives this ability and supercedes the town claim.

He said you CAN. His "no" was just confusing.
Hope you have a great day

I see a lot of people talking about their farming alts or w/e. I just have one char, so if I need to farm I do it, same with building, foraging, tree-felling etc. Should I be using alts? And how do I go about using them, i.e. is it possible to play on 2 chars at once?

Yes it's possible. And most hermits use a main and one alt because of the nature/industry slider.
On their main they go either industry or nature depending on wether they mine or farm.
On the other char they do the opposite.
Hope you have a great day

You can make multiple accounts and with an average PC, you can multiclient.
People use alts because you can't have 1 character mine and farm at the same time.

IF you have an average PC, yup. If you can't do that, if you actually wanna progress get some village mates.

You need more than one account to play multiple characters at once. Some of the custom clients allow you to run multiple log-ins from different tabs so you can play (bot) with more than one character at a time. Otherwise, just use multiple instances of your client (typically Enders).

There are two main ideas behind this. The first is simply protection of your work. The more you distribute it amongst characters, the less it will hurt if one dies. The second has to do with the Personal Beliefs. Some things, such as farming (including tree farming) and sericulture, you want to push your Nature/Industry slider to full nature. Other tasks (forget which off top of my head) you want full industry. It's also handy if you want to play around with some ideas for combat and don't want to risk your main character getting plowed under by a bear or boar (or other players).

I've never really needed more than 3 personally: miner, farmer (naturalist)/crafter, and forager/hunter. It never hurts to start a backup on some of these unless you've gotten so many LP and stats that you've pushed back over towards tradition. The small amount of LP regained from inheritance at full change is nice for restarting, but can be easily overtaken with some industrious play in just a few days.

edit: ninja'd
