I currently have just one kiln and one oven, for example - should I have more? I'm thinking that as I start making a BW, I will need more kilns. Should I invest in more ovens too? And how about things like herb tables, the metal-refining structures, etc? Sorry if it's an odd or oddly-worded question.
I ask because I am just about to finish the (second, just inside the planned BW) palisade delineating my territory and it leaves me with a decent amount of space that's going to be empty otherwise.
it really depends on what path you will take from personal experience 2-6 kilns, 2-4 ore smelters, 1-3 finery forges(you should only 1 but if your a big miner youll want more for ease), 12+ steel crucibles, 6-12 ovens
that usually does it for me
You can make shit kilns out where you dig your bricks. 1 kiln in base is enough for making higher q bricks/bone ash/pottery.
Smelters and finery forge should be underground where you mine. You can claim/palisade (brick if you're a determined hermit) it cheaply enough. And hauling wood/coal down there is about as much work as hauling ore up. Crucis I do agree with, they're a pain and running 1 is about as hard as running 10, but it should most definitely be underground. Ovens you'll want to scale with your crops, but again they're easier to do in batches. 6 ovens would probably be fine for a hermit, my village of 12 runs off 12 ovens and we're not unhappy with it.
The point of these modifications: Trying to make you look poor. I'd even go so far as to say don't leave metal related chests outside at any time. As a hermit, you can't defend yourself, you can only hope not to be targetted. Brickwall is ultimately a necessity, but looking poor helps a lot too.
