Ahh okay, I thank you two for your input. It would seem that the best option in the end would be not to allow strangers near to my hermitage. It is customary for customers to trade at the merchant's idol?

Most traders oath you in - but some won't... sometimes they state it in their OP - and you're free to ask Traders by PM

with the recent rash of oathkillings, traders without trade idols prefer to oath out from what I see in AfO. Most they lose is the alt and that trade value. Oathing in brings the chance of hostile warrior. Not every trader has warriors onstaff 24/7 to handle the issue and they aren't always competent fighters themselves.

At least you can't summon an army inside anymore.

question for the late worlders: Has anyone tried raising hide quality in animals for bone quality? Specifically I'm curious if it can out compete chicken quality end game.

I have a few questions about animals
1) does food Q matter? I searched and someone said it does and others said it doesn't. :?
2) what to do so babies would not be born outside the fence? even if it 20 tiles wide an animal can just come to the edge and give birth so a baby will be outside.
3) and for babies feeding do they need a direct access to their mothers or it is like a fodder radius?

1) It softcaps the other qualities, at least for the offspring
2) Lay rocks outside the wall as seen here:

3) Fodder radius. You can also put the mother milk in a barrel they can drink from.
