Can breaking a cave in rock cause another cave in?
Also, what sort of str/tool Q do I need to break one.

Was doing a mining pattern that isn't supposed to cave, lucky they missed me...

I don't know.
The only pattern that I know guarantees no cave-in is: _|¯|_|¯|_|¯|_|¯|_|¯|_|¯|_

From what I've been led to believe, the angle at which you mine is also important. It may be that the tile you're mining from matters as much as the pattern.
