I think you can drop the scent and pick it up again from the original spot, easily, resetting the amount of uses?

Also true, but you can't have both scents from the same crime in the same inventory/container obviously.

If it was possible, after doing one theft there would be no penalty in doing more thefts at the same time and the same place...
So it's actually a pretty neat restriction in ranging.
