There's some people who will kill you for not speaking their language. And then there's some people who will kill you just because they can. The secret to surviving in this game is to capitalize on these peoples' laziness, by being inaccessible to their murdering. Some of the best ways to do this are:

- Being asleep
- Being surrounded by walls
- Living somewhere that's hard to travel to
- Living somewhere where they don't even realize something might be there

It partly comes down to luck, but the above are all much more reliable than learning to speak Russian, which probably won't even help when they show up, and is even less likely to help with raiders who speak obscure dialects of English with non-standard spelling and grammar. I've been enjoying all the above, at different times. It seems to have worked so far.
