You guys had to trespass over the abandoned claim outside that cave to get inside too, so I'm not exactly sure what kind of explanation that scent screen gives.

any scent that leads to someone is good enough reason to kill,
weather it be tresspass or murder. Trespass is one of the most efficient sources of tracking, especially because there is a chance it could be extremely recent, where as murder could of been there for weeks.
